Hijab is a political symbol for Islam. It's alot like hooked swastikas for Nazis, or the hammer and sickle for Communists. Because Muslims are terrorists, it should be banned as a symbol for terrorism. It's not really that hard to understand.

This might make sense if women in headscarves were the ones planning and committing terrorist acts - but they seldom are. Sure, there are women brainwashed or forced into suicide bombings, but they're not carrying the explosives in their hair.

Hijab isn't a "symbol" of terrorism or even of Islam in the same way that swastikas symbolize White supremacy. Sorry they're making things tough for you binary thinkers, but unless they're carrying an ISIS flag, there really isn't any symbol displayed by Muslims that says "Hey! I'm a terrorist!"

My brief trip to the Arabian Penninsula in '91 convinced me that keeping that fine wind-blown grit off your scalp is a good idea. A lot of people in my unit had to have a doctor dig the compacted dust & wax out of our ears. I think hijab was a local custom that became mandatory, in the same way that the Manchu conquerors imposed the queue on the rest of China.

It makes you a MASSIVE hypocrite, like this guy, who thinks capital punishment is only wrong when it's done by capitalists, but is perfectly fine under socialism and communism. Or like the Christian fundies who rant and rave about the evils of Shari'a law, when their only real problem with it is that it isn't Biblical law.

It means you have no principles. You don't oppose tyranny and oppression because you're fundamentally opposed to injustice, you oppose them because they're not your version of tyranny and oppression, which makes you exactly as bad as a theocrat. There's no difference between you and them. This is why you keep getting quoted here, again and again, because you're just as much of a reprehensible fundamentalist as extremist Christians and Muslims, with all the same faults and the same depressing lack of capacity for reason, logic, and critical thinking.

You know that thing you said? "Atheism can't be tyranny because it's factually right?" Guess what. Literally every fundie believes this about their worldview. Christians believe Christianity can't be tyranny because it's "factually right." Muslims believe Islam can't be tyranny because it's "factually right."

HERE's what's factually right - you're no special snowflake. Whether someone believes in one god, or another, or doesn't believe at all doesn't change one god damn thing. The universe will keep on keeping on.

Do you know what it means to be radicalized? You should. You're advocating for radicalized atheism.

I don't understand why anyone would want to wear face-covering veils, but I also don't understand why anyone would want to wear a bikini. Basically, it's none of my business what others wear. A hijab is not that different than the scarfs we wrap around our heads and necks up here in Northern Europe in Winter. In an area that's arid, with lots of sand blowing around, a hijab is probably practical to keep the sand out of your hair.

If you're used from childhood to see others in hijabs, it's just tradition, not tyranny, to don one yourself when you become adult. A hundred years ago, adult women didn't leave the house bare-headed in Sweden; only tramps and trollops did that.

Is it tyranny to force people to wear underwear in public?

In Nigeria, we have churches where women are expected to cover their hair. Some of these churches not only expect a woman to cover their hair when they attend church but also when they are not in a private place.
The hair covering thing isn't just a Muslim thing, in some places it is also a christian thing. I have a christian girl try to convince me of why I should cover my hair using scriptures from the bible. Of course being a christian myself I was able to counter her argument also using scriptures from the bible. However, at the end of the day I would not have tried to make her stop covering her hair as that was her choice.

In relation to feminist defense of the hijab, it simply boils down to not forcing your views on others. Fight for their right to chose whether to wear an hijab or not and with time they will be able to chose what makes them most comfortable. Force it and you will doing the equivalent of forcing someone who has always worn long sleeves and long skirts to go out in a sleeveless little black dress.

Genital mutilation is actually physically harmful and cannot be compared to the hijab. I don't even think it makes sense in the context of your argument that "oppression in the name of religion is acceptable so long as the name of that religion isn't Christianity" because circumcision is also practiced by Christians.
