I believe that having openly gay people in the military is not good. I think that having openly gay people in the military is detrimental because it brings a sexual tension and an interpersonal tension into the combat unit scenario that is an unnecessary distraction. It very easily causes tension between members of the unit because it is a very unnatural lifestyle. Plus it is hard to get past all the stereo types that accompany the lifestyle such thinking gay guys are feminine or that they are more likely child molesters. Those two stereotypes alone very easily lead to tension.

I'd make a joke about how if you're worried about sexual tension between troops of the same gender, you'd surely have to be against women in the military too. However, you almost certainly are.
And perhaps a better solution to tension caused by people believing stereotypes, that you freely accept are stereotypes and thusly not true, would be to educate troops, not ban them.

You might have a point if you kick out women, too. But if you don't let women (about half the population) and gay men (about 10% of all men) serve, the military will have to pick more armchair soldiers and not all the gays and women who would do a great job serving their country just like many gays and women before them.

This reminds me of a story. During the Second World War, the Allied drive through Italy momentarily stalled on the island of Sicily, which is apparently famous for its hospitable brothels. Needless to say, whole units would leave their postings and "peruse the wares". This also led to whole squads being incapacitated, not by enemy fire, but from the clap, and other STDs. The point here is twofold;A,most straight, male soldiers care far more about whether there is a whorehouse in the vicinity than the sexual identity of their squadmates, and B, gay soldiers may actual do better during civilian occupations, as they're far less likely to abandon their post to get crabs from some young lass.
first gays and pedophiles are not the same thing. Second pedophiles in the army are less likely to diddle children except when they are on leave.
Same sex attraction and underage attraction are not one and the same.
Those stereotypes only exist because of bigots like you. So the best way to deal with it is by removing those stereotypes from the collective mind by getting people like you to stop spreading them.
