The True Gospel
I would say 95% of Christians "tone down" the Gospel on a regular basis in order to avoid "offending" people. We cringe at the thought of sounding "intolerant." Some people claim we must water down the Gospel in order to draw in the unbelievers. That is to say, if we preach the Bible, they'll be "turned off." Here is my response to such heresy:
If we water down the Gospel in order to draw people into Christianity, it won't be Christianity anymore. It will be another gospel, and those people we "draw in" will be deceived by our false gospel, and will surely be condemned as a result.
Do we want to be responsible for such a thing?
Why not preach the truth boldly, and leave the rest to the sovereign God?
Why do we avoid preaching about the Judgement and the Lake of Fire when such events/places are BIBLICAL FACT?
IF WE REALLY LOVE UNBELIEVERS AS WE CLAIM TO, IS IT NOT OUR OBLIGATION TO WARN THEM ABOUT HELL?

Your idea of truth is often avoided, not to draw in unbelievers, but to prevent every reasonable believer from becoming apostate.
Of course you can, provided that you turn the other cheek, don´t judge, are free of sin if you cast the first stone............don´t use the brim and stone just to please some assholes who advocate the crusades.
Besides, didn´t you hear about METAPHORES, you idiot?, the lake of Fire is one. Hell is just a state, a state in which there is no God. Period. Fire is just an image to compare the suffering. And the judgement, please, stick to "biblical facts". YOu don´t know when, where and what the result is going to be. BE CONSEQUENT. Don´t pick and choose what it´s convenient to you.
"Biblical fact" has got to be October's oxymoron of the month.
Actually, though, he's got a point; the more people show EXACTLY what the Bible says, how horrific and misogynistic and violent and arbitrary and inconsistent it all is, the more people will abandon it. So, Brent, I say, "Go for it, dude!"

YOU BET IT IS, YOU CAP-SCREAMING ASSHOLE!
Yes, it's your obligation to warn them. If they say they're not interested, it is then your obligation to leave them alone.
Which particular gospel did you have in mind, genius? There are four of them, and they're each written a different way for different audiences, which is tantamount to watering down.
David, technically, he is right. It is a fact that the Judgement and the Lake of Fire are contained in the Bible. That is not to say however, that they are a factual real world event or place. Very little in the Babble can be reconciled with reality.
And I agree with the rest of your post.
Since you put it that way, if you are acting from compassion and genuine concern, then yes, you should warn them.
However, few evangelists merely "warn." They condemn. They harrangue. They harrass and coerce and hound the "unbelievers." The end does not justify the means. Using violent, self-righetous, and hateful methods to achieve a compassionate result will always destroy the very result you were striving for, and it matters not if the violence is physical, emotional, spiritual, or intellectual. Violence is violence, hate is hate, and self-righetousness is almost by definition self-delusional as well.
If you believe that God gave man free will, then that free will grants man the right to say "no" to God and his messengers. How dare you try to take away the free will that God himself gave?
And this doesn't even touch on the horrible, shameful practice so many fundamentalists have of taking joy in the supposed eternal torture of all who disagree with them.

Sandman, you are the freakin' MAN! This is one of the most poignant, incisive, and cogent comments along these lines that I have ever seen. I love your style of writing and expression generally, and here you have outdone yourself. Well done, sir!

BIBLICAL FACT
Disclaimer: Biblical facts subject to alteration at any time. Christians reserve the right to use facts how they choose. Some facts which contradict each other are merely God's plan, and no attention should be afforded them.
Christianity remains a copyright of Fundies Inc. and is subject to the conditions listed herein.
Well. Not too bad for the most part. Quite scary if 95% are toning down their gawdly witnessing behavior. The remaining 5% are ... fundies?
Then he says, "It will be another gospel, and those people we "draw in" will be deceived by our false gospel, and will surely be condemned as a result."
There they go again, blaming and punishing the victims. But at least he called it bibblical fact, not actual fact or truth or reality.
I want to send Muslims to his church to preach their truth about Allah boldly to those 95%. Though I am wondering just where does he plan going, to warn about hell, that hasn't already heard about it, ad nauseam?
OK fuckwit. Here's the thing. you might want to take a seat.
Jesus said only Jews got to go to heaven in Matthew 19, but you all skip straight over that to get to But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first don't you?
That's right - you "B®ent" get to go to heaven and everyone else gets to go to hell. WRONG! There is no heaven. There is no hell. Jesus was a Jew, and it was Saul and a stack of Romans later that made up the other shit!
OK?
You lose!
Here's my prayer:
Dear god, please let fundie asshats, like Brent and his psychotic bretheren, start preaching the true bible. Allow all ears to hear your written words as in Exodus 21:7 and Exodus 35:2, Leviticus 20:13 and 24:16, Deuteronomy 12:30 and 13:6-10. Allow each mind to comprehend the true meaning of your words and the words of your faithful followers.
Amen
My Brain Hurts,
But that would mean forcing Christians to make a decision about parts of the Bible which make them uncomfortable. Moreover, it would conflict with their convenient position that god hates the sin, and not the sinner, despite the fact that he clearly wants them dead and in hell for all eternity.
Surely there's some way to reach a compromise here?
Oh wait. No there isn't. Either the Bible is inerrant, or it isn't.
@Julian
Wolf, don't forget the other 6 or more gospels that never made it into the bible because they didn't go with all that 'Jesus is the son of God and rose again' bullcrap.
True, true, but even assuming that those Gospels are complete bullshit, he's still got the numbers wrong.
IF WE REALLY LOVE UNBELIEVERS AS WE CLAIM TO, IS IT NOT OUR OBLIGATION TO WARN THEM ABOUT HELL?
Depends. If you're one of those who think that God wouldn't punish someone for rejecting him if he never heard about God, you ought to keep your big fat mouth shut and stop stealing people's Get Out of Hell Free cards.
The problem with this way lies in two points. One, many Christians today want to be Christian ONLY PROVIDED THAT THEY HOLD SPECIAL PRIVILEDGES, that they are part of a selected club which makes them contemptously superior to the rest of the people. Second, he is unable to conceive(mainly because of ignorance) that many things that "traditionally" are attributed to the Bible are, in fact, an attempt to please some idiots who hadn´t left the "old ways" of war and violence. For example, there is not a IOTA about homosexuality in the New Testament. Neither is against women. Take your own conclusion. Why is it more correct to please the hawks of society than peacemakers and the rather leftish and liberal elements of society?. I think this guy deserves mirror-award.
Weren't the Gospels more about peace, love, and forgiveness? And also, giving up everything you own and love so you can get into Heaven?
Maybe he got the Old Testament and the Gospels mixed up.
I would say 95% of Christians "tone down" the Gospel on a regular basis in order to avoid "offending" people.
Are you SHITTING ME? The ones I get saddled with don't know how to shut up or stop. They make it their mission in life, and they aren't the worst? Oh fuck.
my response to such heresy
"Oh DO tell! I am hanging on your...*yawn*...on your every word."
Biblical FACT? Bwa-hah-hah-ha-hah-ha!
Warn me about hell? Like the hell of having you in my immediate family? Brrrr. That's some good cruel.
I'm wondering about the lake of fire, myself. Does that show up in Revelations, aka the shroom trip book? All I remember Jesus saying is something about eternal darkness, which would kinda preclude fire.
--GF
A flat earth is also a biblical fact,
But you have warned me about hell, you job is done,, so FUCK OFF ALREADY
Oh, I wholeheartedly agree. Include all of the racism, sadism, sexism, smut that's actually in the Bible whenever witnessing. Please.
The True Gospel
Oxymoron.
I would say 95% of Christians "tone down" the Gospel on a regular basis in order to avoid "offending" people.
Yet you still offend a lot of people anyway.
We cringe at the thought of sounding "intolerant."
Stop cringing. You don't need to worry about sounding intolerant. We already know you're intolerant.
Some people claim we must water down the Gospel in order to draw in the unbelievers.
You don't. You will, however, need evidence to support the validity of the gospels if you want this unbeliever.
That is to say, if we preach the Bible, they'll be "turned off."
I must admit, that's true. Racism, sexism, homophobia, slavery, advocacy of genocide, and absurd statements about the world around us tend to do that.
Here is my response to such heresy:
If we water down the Gospel in order to draw people into Christianity, it won't be Christianity anymore.
Christianity is already radically different from what was originally practiced centuries ago. The Bible has been modified hundreds of times, through multiple translations, mistranslations, copying mistakes, and deliberate forgeries for political reasons.
It will be another gospel...
Meh. Gospels are a dime a dozen.
...and those people we "draw in" will be deceived by our false gospel...
Your gospel is already false. You may want to give it a rewrite.
...and will surely be condemned as a result.
You may want to check on the validity of that premise before you go any further.
Do we want to be responsible for such a thing?
Please don't spend your life miserable out of a mistaken belief that you are responsible for such a thing.
Why not preach the truth boldly...
Yeah, why not? Put down your Bible and preach some actual truth.
...and leave the rest to the sovereign God?
Hint: Your belief that there's some magic sovereign god somewhere is the main barrier to your preaching the truth.
Why do we avoid preaching about the Judgement and the Lake of Fire when such events/places are BIBLICAL FACT?
Because they're not actual fact?
Put aside your biblical facts and start preaching some fact facts.
IF WE REALLY LOVE UNBELIEVERS AS WE CLAIM TO, IS IT NOT OUR OBLIGATION TO WARN THEM ABOUT HELL?
@VoltaireAs long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities.
Confused?
