The South Napa earthquake was not near any active faults, and buildings were not prepared to survive it. Atheistic science is remarkably inept at explaining earthquakes, many of which are not near active faults.

Christian Science's explanation why earthquakes don't hit where believers say they should: "God works in mysterious ways".
Strangely, that's my definition of inept.
Wrong again Andy.
The earthquake was near the San Andreas FAULT SYSTEM. I suppose your tiny brain can't wrap its mind around this but faults aren't simple lines. There a branching network of fault crevises and subsystems.
It's just going takes some time to determine which subsystem of the fault is at fault.
A fault is more or less active, that's why it's called a fault and not bedrock.
Wikipedia: "The West Napa Fault was considered one of the possible sources for the earthquake" .
Sounds like instead of "not near any active faults", it was near several, and they have yet to determine which one is the "guilty" one.
It's not atheistic science, stupid, but secular science, also know as Real science.
The "alternate" one is Bullshit science, also known as "Christian science".
Yeah, it's not like we've ever had any earthquakes in California before.

Quick! Someone get me a wine glass!
There remain many flaws in our understanding of earthquakes - even now, we're far better at predicting where they'll happen than when, and unexpected earthquakes do appear (if not in this case). There are plenty of people alive today older than the acceptance of plate tectonics, and we'll know far more about earthquakes 30 years from now than we do today.
And yet for all its faults, science is still far more successful at predicting earthquakes than geomancy or biblical prophecy.
Wikipedia has a whole article on intraplate earthquakes. Many intraplate earthquakes occur because of faults that are not near a fault line. By the way, a fault line itself is not one singular line, it is many little faults.

Of course, because this earthquake occurred in California, I doubt it's considered an intraplate earthquake.
Aw, don't blame Andy for being ignorant -- it's not his fault.
*chuckle* - Get it? Not his fault ? See what I did there? *snicker* *snort* Damn, I kill me...Haw haw hawww .

There are plenty of people alive today older [and stupider] than the acceptance of plate tectonics,
Science explains earthquakes quite well. No one predicts earthquakes well...yet. But bet on this, it will be scientists, not religious zealots, who will learn to predict earthquakes.
Unlike in fundie science, where earthquakes happen because somewhere else in the country (or even the world), two men got married or someone had an abortion or someone slashed Westboro Baptist's tires or something.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
