I used to watch that show in the 90s. I thought it was pretty damned funny.
Also: you're a retard, so STFU.
"its a horrible brittish show from the 1970s with an openly gay man."
It's not horrible. I enjoyed it quite a bit when I caught it on PBS.
"i had no idea that was allowed on tv in the 1970s."
Get your head out of your ass and pay attention then. I suspect you still don't have any idea what's on TV.

Yes, yes. Any moment now. Just like it has been for the last two thousand years (or at least the last few hundred since the idea became anything other than heresy).
Even better, "Man About the House" was on British TV at that time with a hetero man pretending to be gay. (If that sounds familiar, Chrissie wasn't actually stupid in the original show, the joke was that everyone assumed she was).
John: Ann Coulter is a successful woman who goes about preaching her ideology. This is in defiance of the law of the Bible and hence is proof that the Rapture is imminent.
But seriously, complaining about stuff from the 70s being proof that the Rapture is imminent?
30 years and no Rapture.
huh.
You do realize that the 1970s weren't the 1950s? Homosexuality was just beginning to come into the mainstream during the mid/late 70s (and finally took the spotlight in the 80s), so it really isn't a shock that ONE show had a gay man in it.
Edit: Wait, so this was one of those "Is he or isn't he?" characters? In that case, there is really nothing unique about him appearing in a 70s TV show... characters like that have been used on TV for decades...
Oh puh-leeze, a gay man in retail? How is that news? I was always far more concerned about the welfare of Mrs. Slocum's poor pussy.
Theme song lyrics:
Ground floor perfumery,
stationery and leather goods,
wigs and haberdashery
kitchenware and food...going up
First floor telephones,
gents ready-made suits,
shirts, socks, ties, hats,
underwear and shoes...going up
Second floor carpets,
travel goods and bedding,
material, soft furnishings,
restaurant and teas. Going down!
I would also like to point out that the American sitcom "Soap," which ran from 1977-1981 had, from the begining, a main character that was gay- Jody Dallas, played by none other that Billy Crystal.
Gay in the 1970s? What about perennial game show guests Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly?
or LIBERACE! He even had a whole damned show of his own in the 70s and he was about as gay as they get!
Apparently this person just got a TV. They got a lot of catching up to do...
1970 is getting on for 40 years ago. Rapture at any moment? I mean 40 years...any moment?
You are tight arsed and closed minded that you cannot take comedy for what it is. It all has to be reduced to the irrational fundies take reality.
I have a suggestion. Why don't you buy yourself some special Kool Aid. It would solve all your problems with this sinful world.
its a horrible brittish show from the 1970s with an openly gay man.
It's pretty fucking funny. But I can see why you wouldn't think so, having had all of the joy and laughter sucked out of you by christian fundamentalism. Also, please use capitals. Sentence structure is important.
i had no idea that was allowed on tv in the 1970s.
Not in the fundie-infested USA. In Britain, where you morons don't run everything. Please also use spell check if it's otherwise impossible for you to pound out a word that isn't mangled.
this is just further proof that the rapture has to happen at any moment
Okay, so if I understand you correctly, the world is about to end horribly at any moment because a British broadcasting company produced a show 30 years ago that featured a homosexual? Punctuation is our friend. That's important too. Please learn how to use it.
Yeesh. And you live for the opportunity to give atheists shit about their beliefs.
Too much irony and hypocrisy for my meter. Great. Now it's broken. Hope you're happy.
shut your mouth, olivery. You have no sense of humor. The reruns were on our local PBS about 5 or so years ago and that show is hilarious. May I suggest Monty Python movie for the final trumpet?
you wouldn't think the '70's were so nice if your ass had been dropped in a jungle to fight a war you didn't volunteer for.
Gabriel LaVedier: "I'm free! ... To kick your stupid ass for ragging on Mr. Humphries. He was the best character ever."
He was pretty awesome. But then, I liked Are You Being Served? 'cos I likes me some funny, well-written innuendo and double-entendre.
British TV now has openly gay men in two of it's main soaps,
Emmerdale, Eastenders and Coronation Street, in both these soaps they have gay men in complex relationships. In fact in Coronation Street a main character's long lost father turned out to be a gay man that lost his long term partner and there is kissing before the watershed. Eastenders has had lesbian storylines and Coronation Street is introducing a lesbian.
Cops shows The Bill has had gay and lesbian coppers and
the Scottish police show Taggart (my fave) has had an openly gay character DC Stuart Frasier and gay couples are the norm with in the programme set in Glasgow.
American's couldn't cope with British TV...
And all David Croft's programmes had gay characters such as
Gurber in Allo Allo and Mr Humphries... played by gay actors.
Guys, Humphries was gay. He wasn't just a mama's boy, though he was that, too. How about the time the woman kissed him, and he said something like, "Do that again, I'll be over on your side?"
For some reason, the producers just didn't want to admit it.
Awesome show, though.
"[Star Trek]its a horrible American show from the 1960s/70s with a black woman in a position of authority (bridge crew). i had no idea that was allowed on tv in the 1970s."
Equally as biggotted and stupid.
Considering that, in the Bible, Jesus tells his followers that some of them would still be alive when he returned, by the time "Are You Being Served" was on TV there'd been almost 2000 years of "any moment". And now an extra 40 years. Yeah, I can feel the imminence growing like a holy Shepard's paradox .
It was funny then, and it was showed on tv for the next thirty years. You, on the other hand, do not amuse us.
this is just further proof that the rapture has to happen at any moment
No sign yet of Mrs. Slocombe's pussy appearing in a rather surreal version of Ragnarok, eh?!
Because Fenrir was so scared of Mr Humphries, he had to have a lie-down and put his position of Harbinger of the End Times out to tender, and a regular innuendo by a woman won the bid.
This is further proof that Basement Cat - and by extension, Ceiling Cat - exists. =^_^=
"Yup, ANY moment now, you just wait..."
*taps feet, looks at watch*
"Aaany second..."
*gives big yawn, looks at watch again*
"Anyone wanna go for a beer? This seems to be taking a while..."
Confused?
