This is little publicized as Arab astronauts were first into space in the year 1344. This history is rarely found in American textbooks.

Ground control to Major Teomo
Ground control to Major Teomo
Take your protein Falafel and put your turban on
Ground Control to Major Teomo
Commencing countdown, slingshot on
Check ignition and may Allah's love be with you
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Liftoff
This is Ground Control to Major Teomo
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose turbans you wear
Now it's time to leave the barrel if you dare
"This is Major Teomo to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a fig barrel
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past six miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my primitive wooden ship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much
"She knows"
Ground Control to Major Teomo
Your oars are dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Teomo?
Can you hear me, Major Teomo?
Can you hear me, Major Teomo?
Can you....
"Here am I floating round my wood crate
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
Don't you know, it was high tech flying carpets, but the experiments didn't get far because they hadn't invented pressure suits, plus the carpets tended to burn up pretty rapidly on re-entry.
The nervous systems down,
the nervous systems down, i know...
I can never get out of here
I don't wanna just float in fear
A dead astronaut in space...

Huge advances in chemistry, philosophy, mathematics and engineering in the middle ages - especially when compared to the Medieval Christians, ok. Kudos where it’s due, I'll give them that. But astronauts? How the fuck do you propose they got into orbit? Sailing ships, catapults, camels - what?
Definitely a Muslim. Just like they not only discovered America around 1000A.D. but when they did they found Muslims settled here.
Retarded - honestly I think Islam has it worse when it comes to just making shit up.
No, the first arab astronaut flew into space in 1405, not in 1344. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong in achilles6256' statement. The name of this astronaut was: Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
What vessel did he use to get into space? The craft was called ... Discovery .
Ah, before I forget: The year when he made his trip calculated in western calendar was: 1985 ;-) 1405 is the date in islamic calendar.
And as space flight wasn't quite spectacular in the year 1985 anymore compared to the pioneering age in the 60s, this flight surely isn't mentioned much in US textbooks.
@Anon :
Sultan bin Salman's flight was mentioned in three of my textbooks. Of course, I took "History of Human Spaceflight".
Also, your post is Made Of Win.
