[Illinois Family Institute encouraging parents to pull their children out of classes headed by gay or liberal teachers]
1-Parents can go to their middle school and/or high school websites and find out which teachers sponsor gay and straight alliances and liberal political activist groups (e.g. AWARE).
2- Parents can also ask what texts will be taught or used (e.g. The Chocolate War, Fat Kid Rules the World, Angels in America, The Laramie Project, or The People’s History of the United States) by a particular teacher. Parents should ask for the reading list for the entire year. Teachers who have a reasonable degree of respect for the values and beliefs of all parents will not have highly controversial texts on either required or recommended reading lists.
3- If parents have children who have already gone through the school or have already completed a year or more, they should ask those children and/or their friends or friends’ parents which teachers are known for bringing their politics into the classroom or who displays a “Safe Space” sticker, the inverted pink triangle, the rainbow flag, or the lower case Greek letter “lambda” on their desk, classroom door, or wall. Students usually know who the liberal, activist teachers are. Liberal teachers develop reputations, often as the “cool” teachers.

And we wouldn't want kids being intellectually challenged and stimulated, would we?

Obviously the proper solution is to fire every teacher that any kid actually likes and replace them instead with hateful drudges.
You think women are baby mills and support censorship. Go spit.

The Illinois Family Institute, here to help your family by ensuring that your children have no lessons with teachers they actually like.

You are being disrespectful to LGBT people yourself. Teachers are not required to acquiesce to that. Only to the school itself. What you say is controversial is normal to other people. And what you believe is normal is incredibly insensitive to others.
Students usually know who the liberal, activist teachers are.
Seeing as how you have no idea what liberalism is, I seriously doubt your kids know.

My cool teacher was a gay christian. Fuck you.
@cdcdrr :
My cool teacher was a gay christian.
My boyfriend is a gay Christian schoolteacher. I'm not sure if his students think he's cool, but I do.
@Doubting Thomas:
That's a good view to take. In my experience, EVERY group or org in the US that has "Family" in its name is a radical religious rightwing outfit. It's almost become a code-word for, "We hate Teh Ghey, ' Bortion, and anything to do with that Icky Sex stuff; an' we wanna make shur that kids learn their Bahbles instead 'o that heathen Science!"

No thanks...I WANT to learn.
Years ago, when I was in High School, I had an art teacher named Mr. Wilson. Kids loved him! He was happy, chipper, kind, fun & very cool!
...yet, here's the clincher...he was a Born-Again Christian who believed in Creationism & organized prayer in school...YET HE STILL MANAGED TO BE HIP & COOL!
Mr. Wilson's very existence would make the OP's head explode!
Sinister.
People that want to ban books are the worst kind of people. I hate to go Godwin, but it always brings to my mind SS men flinging handfuls of books onto bonfires.
What have they got to fear from a book that just mentions homosexuality, or tries to lessen bullying and spread tolerance? The most sinister thing here, though, is the attempt to censor The People's History of the United States, ie, to suppress actual facts about American history.
Point 3 reminds me of the horrible children in 1984, acting as spies and snitching on their parents, or in this case, their teachers.
"You have been found to be a liberal! Traitor! Thought criminal! The authorities will be informed!"
I hear the distant sound of cattle trucks and the hiss of Zyklon B...
The Illinois "Family" Institute, where we're for families, as long as they aren't gay, bisexual, transexual, tolerant, or liberal.
Having not recognised several of the OP's references, I Googled a few of them.
I am now very grateful that I can now identify myself as a "straight ally", a phrase new to me until today.
@Philbert: The Lambda is described here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_symbols
So if a teacher comes in with a conservative view and brings it to classroom...
When I was in high school, 94-99, wehad teachers with liberal and conservative views. They were great teachers though. And no one complained. It's like people are now dragging us back.
The Papabear Institute encourages the IFI folks to pull out of the civilized world and move to a desert island where the will never have to be exposed to gay and liberal teachers or good books or movies which have the word "poopie" in them. And, you won't have to deal with any gays... except those closeted in your ranks... and those you will give birth to.
@Philbert McAdamia:
According to Wikipedia....
"The lambda (lower case) was selected as a symbol by the Gay Activists Alliance of New York in 1970, and declared the international symbol for gay and lesbian rights by the International Gay Rights Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1974."
I figured as much. Fundie is probably referring to Lambda Legal, and other such LGBT Rights groups.
As for the "Safe Space" stickers, I believe that ALL classrooms, in ALL public schools, should be Safe Spaces. For ALL students regardless. If a child doesn't feel safe in the building they attend every day, something is wrong
In other words, "I don't want my kid learning anything that doesn't come from TBN, the Bible, or Faux News".
"Liberal teachers develop reputations, often as the “cool” teachers."
Because, somehow, Liberal teachers have this terrible habit of seeing value in every student and they also have the silly idea that the truth matters.
Illinois Family Fascist Institute
That is what I do whenever I see 'Family' in any organisation's name. Near-Godwin? Yes, but it hasn't failed me yet.
There's always Christian schools like the one I went to that for five years had a high school math teacher who dropped out his first year in college (and couldn't teach regardless), taught Creationism like hell, had textbooks full of popular myths and outright bullshit, punished thinking outside the box, and of course the teachers who would call you out and talk to you personally if you expressed anything remotely rationalist and tolerant. Wait a minute, you'd LIKE that, wouldn't you?
When my kids were in school, I would've been more concerned with teachers pushing their religion or conservative agenda on my kids. Fortunately, living in Ontario, Canada, the topic never came up. They had great teachers who fostered in them an interest to learn and to continue learning.
Fuck you and your narrow-mindedness.
@Sasha
Of course not. They minds could never even conceive the idea.
And if it turns out their child is gay/bi/something they don't like, then obviously they were corrupted by an outside source. Obviously.
@ Sasha and Blue the Thief
Yup, and that's exactly the reason why I'm still "in the closet" about my bisexuality to my family. Fundie Christians the lot of them, and demonising hmosexuality very often.
"Teachers who have a reasonable degree of respect for the values and beliefs of all parents will not have highly controversial texts on either required or recommended reading lists. "
On the other hand, teachers who have a high degree of respect for their students' ability to think for themselves about controversial material will.
Really? You're going to give a teacher shit because they have a Safe Space sticker? What kind of horrible monstrous people wouldn't want a student to feel they had at least one place to go where they wouldn't be judged or treated like shit by biased idiots and bullies?
The kind of horrible monstrous people at the Illinois Family Institute, obviously, but still... How does it harm any "good Christian child," seriously? It's not about politics, it's about providing support for students. Especially those who are often neglected or marginalized. Ignoring gay students isn't "being neutral," it's harming them to not acknowledge they exist and to not offer them any support.
In my high school (and my college as well, incidentally), absolutely every classroom had the "Safe Space" sticker/inverted pink triangle on the door. We had a Gay/Straight Alliance, as well. I think the Illinois Family Institute would suffer cardiac arrest if they saw such a school.
Of course, I live in eeeevil Massachusetts, so I suspect that most fundies would suggest that True Christians should have fled the state long ago anyways.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
