Here are some other things that are "just words":
kike, nigger, wop, beaner, cracker, . . .
Get the picture? Words should be chosen wisely. I'm sure wars have begun over the misuse of words.
O c'mon...honestly, if you guys find the word towelhead racist then pls explain why. Muslims aren't a race, they're a religion as far as I know. White muslims, black muslims, asian muslims, see what I mean?
I've been commenting for awhile here and never have I said anything racist or defended a racist.
George Carlin (and Lenny Bruce I remember), had a splendid rant about the use of these words (kike, nigger, wop etc), maybe you should look it up.
Would people be offended if I started calling christians "crossnecks" ?
Think about it.
@ Apostle,
While you may not find it offensive, it could be to others. Think back to the scene in Clerks II, where Randall wants to popularize the term 'porch monkey' as a term meaning something along the lines of 'cheeky person'. While Randall didn't see the offensive side to it, the black customers were infuriated because it was and still is a derogatory term for coloured people.
While I agree that Muslims are not a race, the... ignorance, I guess you could call it, is like racism. Some things depend on context, in this case the very term is offensive to the Islamic community. You might not mind being picked on for something day in day out, but many other people do.
This has been a PSA from KTT. Try the veal, fuckers.
In any event, it's not referring to Muslims specifically, but Middle Easterners, referring to the stereotypical turban. While not as bad as referring to a black guy as a nigger, it's roughly equivalent to calling a Hispanic guy a wetback, or an Irish guy a mick.
Because it confuses people who are non-Muslims who simply enjoy wearing towels on their heads?
Also, I don't think it's accurate. Not all Muslims wear the turban thing.
I have a very simple rule.
If you wouldn't call someone by a certain name to their face, you don't call them that on the interwebs.
Sometimes I cringe at what FSTDT posters write, I certainly wouldn't want anyone to 'die in a fire' (except perhaps Fred Phelps, (that's a joke incidentally, even he doesn't deserve that).
This is one of the strangest aspects of bigotry - just occasionally, you meet someone who's been casually abusing others for so long that they've somehow actually forgotten that they're being abusive; it's just become meaningless, unconscious routine for them.
What's so offensive about calling people "whitebread", "cracker", "WASP" and "white trash"? I mean, they're just words!
I love how people are thinking "Oh but if we said it about white people you would be furious", yet the guy is Zen to it.
The guy thinks getting insulted by slurs is stupid, that is not racist.
That's mature.
Confused?
