Some prophecy experts believe that the New Jerusalem will hover above the earth during the Millennium, and that we'll live in it. Then, of course, once the new earth is created, the Heavenly city will rest smack-dab on the surface of the new planet.
I hope that'll be the case--we'll have the best of both worlds that way! =)
