I thought at the time AIDS would destroy the gay rights movement. But it energized them. They began Act Up as a means to simultaneously deepen their victim status while escalating demands on bigots and haters. I remember going to an art gallery in the early 90s where I first found out we guys were supposed to wear women’s shoes. I thought how dull and demurred but to my surprise my friend actually put a pair on! But I see it is now spreading down and out to the masses. Status-marking Eloi really like this sfuff.

And you Morlocks lack the ability to appreciate it - it's like casting pearls before swine.
You don't want to put on women's shoes? Fine by me. But just because something offends you doesn't mean it isn't valid as an art form. Just the opposite, really. By my definition, if it invokes emotion and makes you think seriously about something, it's art.

Yeah, funny how God's punishment is pretty ineffective against condoms and medical science.
AIDS made it painfully clear (in more ways than one) who was gay, so the hiding in the closet became harder. AIDS also made decent people feel compassion with them, and began to accept them as they are.
They don't have any demands on bigots and haters that the bigots and haters don't also demand; to be treated with respect and to be accepted.
Supposed to wear women's shoes? Why? Aren't women's shoes mostly less dull and demurred than men's shoes?
i don't usually think much of modern art, but it's most often because i think it's abstracted itself too far away from any comprehensible or worthwhile message and/or meaning. forcing gallery visitors to literally walk in someone else's shoes, now, i think little of that because it's too anvilicious for an adult audience.
Ever hear of Ryan White? If HIV and AIDS was meant to be the destroyer of the gays, your god's aim is crap.
As for shoes, care to guess who wore these shoes in the Renaissance?

If you're surprised at the LGBTs not being destroyed by HIV/AIDS, then you just don't know the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity. As Princess Leia & Obi Wan Kenobi put it in the original trilogy (respectively):
* "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin [or any oppressor], the more star systems [progressive movements/the oppressed] will slip through your fingers."
* "You can't win, Darth [oppressor]. If you strike me down [oppressed], I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
For all the hate Star Wars gets these days, many forget that the original trilogy was a great & beloved piece of cinema with a lot of inspirational lines.
Even the dopey prequels were meditations on how oppressive regimes gain power. Frankly, if the prequels were better-acted, they probably wouldn't be loathed. I guess that's why folks hate the prequels....crappy wooden acting & Jar Jar.
But I digress. Contrary to what the novel 1984 stated in Room 101, YOU CANNOT DESTROY the human spirit!
Finally, HIV/AIDS can strike anybody of any orientation, you nincompoop!
About that bit with the shoes & whatnot...there's nothing wrong with androgyny, and also....

"Me and my boyfriend wouldn't dream of wearing heels & frou frou like some cupcake! LET'S WATCH SOME FOOTBAAAALLL!"
I probably wouldn't wear the shoes either (assuming they were heels), but that's more out of a desire not to break my ankle than anything else.
If they were flats I don't see the point.
I'd abandon that art ship cause its too hamfisted for my tastes, not for wearing women's shoes.
But AIDS doesnt have some magical gay killing properties.
At least you admit to being a bigot and hater.
@ Spuki:
The prequels got better as they went along, mostly due to fucking Jar-Jar being sidelined more and more.
Confused?
