Today's liberal can only be matched to one time in world history. That would be the French Revolution. Matter of fact this is where the concept of the left came from. I think you know how fouled up these people were. Erm... what? Radical Liberalism inspired the American Revolution a decade before the French. Modern Liberalism, arguably came into existance with Teddy Roosevelt, more than a century later, who was pushed into office and caused the Progressive Movement to take flower. That said the basic principles of liberalism and conservatism are intrinsic to human society.
Speaking of stopping Hitler, as I sure you are well aware, Hitler and FDR went into power only four months apart. Point? How many lives would have been save had Hitler been taken out in 1933 or 1934? Yes, just because we were in the midst of the Great Depression doesn't mean we couldn't have invaded a foreign country to deal with a threat that the rest of the world didn't care about! Not to mention that FDR and the liberals of that era wanted us to have a stronger policy against Hitler well before the conservatives got their act together Instead we fought a war over oil in the Pacific in 1941 with a weakened arm forces that had been allowed to decay. For fuck's sake, it was the Great Depression! People couldn't afford food, let alone to prop up a massive military budget. Also, why is it our responsibility to "take care off" imperialists in Japan or Germany? If history is allowed to repeat itself, we will see the same thing happen again.

What prevented nuclear amageddon was the fact that both powers had nuclear weapons. Holy sudden transition, Batman!Had the world been armed with conventional weapons, Europe and possibly the entire world might be under the Soviet Union now. Yeah, since those commies really wanted to slog through another horrific land war after WWI caused their economy to collapse and the revolution(s) and WWII had seen the systematic massacre of slavs.(This would have made a lot of leftist happy, we certainly saw an example of this in South East Asia). Actually, their militant tactics would have made the right quite happy, since both seem to enjoy torture Eastern European style so much. There has been recent nuclear lately activity in both Iran and North Korea. Just North Korea... Even though North Korea has actually tested a weapon and Iran is working on one, we have heard nothing from Green Peace. They're worried about open air tests killing complete innocents... not nuclear testing in general, duh. That's not to say they don't care, but that isn't their organization's specific issue. It would be like AARP talking about economic disadvantagements that minorities have. It's an important topic, but it's not topical. The way world history has worked is it swings back between being conservative and liberal. Liberals like FDR make the world stable enough so selfish xenophobes can exist in it, as soon as the conservatives take over, we go back into chaos and confusion. Then things fall apart again.
