[About Malaysia imposing Sharia Law on Non-Muslims]
"Sharia Law should apply to the kuffars as well, it is unfair that it does not"

"Sharia Law", like any fundie religious dogma, should apply only to those who believe in it. It should never be enforced by any government. Muslim fundies really are self-serving assholes if they think because they make themselves miserable with puritan nonsense, they should be allowed force it on others who don't share their priggishness.
SpiderWeb: Kafir and kuffar both mean "unbeliever", "infidel". Just two different forms. Actually, kuffar (should be a long a in there) is an intensive form, meaning someone who does a lot of unbelieving :)
No, because not only is it an infringment upon the rights of non-muslims, AND against the Malaysian constitution, even the islamist party is denouncing such laws.
(I'm a non-Muslim Malaysian, BTW)
And the rest of the comments just make me sick. The posters are from Western nations such as Norway and England, yet support syariah law on non-Muslims.
By this logic, it is fair for us to impose on YOU laws to which you don't ascribe...like doing away with sharia law altogether.
Be careful what you wish for...
As a secularist I will say that having different laws which apply to different people is unfair and you shouldn't do it. However, the Sharia laws are backwards and unfair. Quite a bind really, it seems the best answer may be for Sharia to not apply to anyone .

@antichrist
nope, that would be 'kaffer' which is Afrikaans for negro.
It is/was used in Dutch as an insult, but the association with black people is gone (or was even never present) (and it seems a bit fading from use nowadays).
hmm, just looked it up, the origin (acording to the English Wikipedia) seems to be ... 'Kafir', so basicly .. the origin is the same, but through the ages the meaning has been totally altered.
Hmm.. the Dutch version of Wikipedia claims the origin might be 'Kofer' which is Hebrew and Jiddisch for 'Heathen'...so that might explain why in the Netherlands the word simply means 'dimwit' or 'lout', without a reverence to skincolour.
writing as a gay UK citizen, the sooner our sharia-loving bigots leave the better. However, the majority seem to want to stay in our secular democracy and change it to something else. Could it be that the benefits of staying outweigh the attractions of a place like Malaysia
Yet islamic law clearly states that islamic holy law can ONLY be applied to muslims.
And requires that kngs and califs fund non muslim judges to preside over non muslim disputes.
When an afghani christian was arrested for the murder of several christians by the afghani taliban council. The taliban had to find a christian judge to preside at the trial. They had to import their judge from Syria because no native afghani christian was trained in CHRISTIAN holy law.
Your god, your rules, you follow them.
Your god, your hell, you burn in it.
I do believe the term you're looking for is Kafir, and it refers to those who do not believe in Allah or Muhammad, if I am not mistaken. So, given that, why the hell should they have to follow laws based on Allah and Muhammad?
I'd love to see your ramblings when christians get their way and rule the world by their laws. I bet you won't be all for one law applying to everyone then, will you?
There seems to be a misunderstanding here, so once again, say it out loud:
Malaysia is not a Muslim nation.
I fucking come from there, and I get drunk every month like every American I know. I held hands with my ex like any teenager. Only thing are small pockets of assholes like Mustif who want to turn it into a Muslim nation.
When 35% of the population is not Muslim, that's not happening.
So please, get your facts right.
Since nobody got it right yet, it's just the plural form of Kafir (in Arabic. The Arabic word is the root for the derogatory term for black people according to Wikipedia):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kafir
Kafir (Arabic: kafir; plural: kuffar)is an Arabic word meaning "rejecter". In the Islamic doctrinal sense the term refers to a person who does not recognize God (Allah) or the prophethood of Muhammad (i.e., any non-Muslim)
I see it used more and more nowadays in a fairly derogatory manner for non-Muslims, especially from the more fundie muslims.
Unfair for whom?, for the muslims like you who feel incomplete if they don't screw other people's rights?, or for the non-muslims, who should do what you're not willing to do, to be imposed an alien religion on your throats?
@Antichrist it is indeed a racist term IN Africa but it originated in Arabian and literally means "heathen". Europeans copied it from the Islam world, and as colonialism happened, reapplied it to mean "black people" (which considering their world view at the time - was not a major stretch)
@Spiderweb is right about the spelling though.
Don't say it in South Africa though - we WILL beat you to a pulp (and here "we" mean liberal whites... you don't want to KNOW what angry poor black youths would do...)
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
