Oh look at the racists attack a black man just because he runs for president. If this were a white man making the same comment it wouldn't qualify for a submission.

We mock him because he is running for possibly the most powerful job on Earth. His skin colour is irrelevant. He denigrates Science that any high school-er should know, let alone a neurosurgeon. No one seriously believes that he is this stupid, just that he is appealing to the basest of the base vote.

Point of fact you're probably right about the white man bit. If any of the other candidates spewed such nonsense, we'd shrug and assume that they actually believe such rubbish. And that in itself speaks volumes about the dysfunction of the modern Republican party. You can have genuinely stupid candidates and no one bats an eyelid because it is now the new normal. Carson is different though. He is intelligent and knows much better. His utterances are blatant catering to the crazies in the Republican party.

The idea of us being a bunch of racists, while I sit here listening to Sonny Rollins. I'd say the fact that we're willing to attack Ben Carson for his views while we tend to support President Obama means that we're willing to look past skin color and base our opinions of people on their views. I mean, we have Obama who is a mediocre but good-intentioned president, who has to put up with a ton of shit from idiots calling him everything from a Kenyan to a Muslim to a commie Marxist Islamic terrorist intent upon destroying the country. And we defend him because we know those things aren't true and the people saying it are idiots. Then we have Ben Carson who is pandering to the brain-dead fundie conservatives, and may be a brain-dead fundie conservative himself, who's never been in politics before, is totally unqualified, and appears to want to destroy the same science he built his career on and turn the country into a Christian theocracy. Hell yes we're going to attack every stupid thing he says.

In denial of what? I know that he's got brown skin, but that makes him neither smarter nor dumber than if he had had yellow, pink or green skin. That's what I meant with that sentence.

People who know me say that I'm too mellow; I need to stand up for myself more.

We don't have the US problem of hundreds of years of racism. When I was little, in the 70's, almost all darker-skinned people in my town were kids adopted by lighter-skinned parents. Turkish and Italian immigrants were seen as very foreign, and "black". People with darker skin were exotic and interesting.

Is Carson considered (by the republicans only) to be a viable candidate because (1) he's black, so they can claim not to be racist, and (2) he's black, so maybe they can pick up some of the black voters?

I'm guessing that's a lot of it. They probably think that if they vote in an ultra religious conservative nutjob who happens to be black, it makes up for 8 years of depicting Obama as an African witch doctor, calling him a "Kenyan-born usurper," and all that "go back to Africa" talk. Kind of like, "We're not racist. Look, here's our black guy."

As far as trying to pick up some black voters, I'm guessing they think that won't hurt, but for some reason most Republicans seem to be in denial in needing non-white votes. Kind of like when Ann Coulter said to focus on the white vote and to hell with minorities.

There is a third explanation. He's a right wing authoritarian follower. They are able to believe two contradictory things simultaneously and not be troubled by it. A common example is America has freedom of religion and my religion should be enforced by the government.

I personally encountered a YEC with an engineering degree who learned in 5th grade sunday school the 2nd law of thermodynamics "proof" that evolution is impossible. In college he learned the real laws of thermodynamics. He didn't notice the two were in conflict until I asked some embarrassing questions when he was in his late 20s, so he spent nearly 10 years having 2 contradictory beliefs.

Just like Bobby Fischer was a brilliant and talented chess player. He was still a pathologically paranoid antisemitic loon who publicly praised the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Or William Pierce, former professor of physics at Oregon State University and noted author. Mind you, he's better known as the white supremacist shitnoodle who wrote The Turner Diaries and founder of the National Alliance than anything useful he actually did. But both of these people were arguably intelligent, talented people who were also certifiably batshit insane, just like Carson.

If I needed a tumor removed from my frontal lobes without being turned into first base, I might seriously consider Ben Carson. I don't seriously want him anywhere near the Oval Office.
