James Reidnauer and Brent van Besien #racist rawstory.com

A pair of white Florida men have been arrested after shooting at and shouting racial slurs at two biracial children — and claimed that they did so because they thought the kids were on meth.

Orlando’s WFTV reported that James Reidnauer and Brent van Besien were arrested in the city of Leesburg on hate crime charges after shooting at the 16 and 12-year-old brother and sister on March 17.

According to the report, the men confronted the children on a trail owned by a nearby church as they were walking to a convenience store to buy candy.

“Deputies said Reidnauer and van Besien fired at least two shots — one near the girl’s foot and one in the air — before shouting slurs at the biracial children,” WFTV reported, adding that both were uninjured and able to run home.

According to police, the men said they shot at the children because they thought they were, the Orlando Sentinel reported, “meth heads.”

In an interview with local news, Michelle Sabb, the kids’ mother, said she was grateful they made it home unscathed.

“I mean, Trayvon [Martin] — he didn’t make it home,” Sabb said. “What if my son wouldn’t have made it home?”

In 2016, Lake County’s Daily Commercial newspaper reported that van Besien was arrested on domestic violence and armed robbery charges.

A 2017 Lake County booking photo of van Besien shows him with multiple tattoos, including one that appears to be an “Iron Cross,” a German military symbol that according to the Anti-Defamation League later became associated with Nazi Germany.

“After World War II, the medal was discontinued but neo-Nazis and other white supremacists subsequently adopted it as a hate symbol and it has been a commonly-used hate symbol ever since,” the ADL noted.

"Scott", a C-SPAN caller #fundie rawstory.com

A C-SPAN caller on Wednesday suggested that President Donald Trump’s partial government shutdown was tied to the second coming of Jesus Christ.

C-SPAN host John McArdle spoke to a New York man named Scott who called in on Washington Journal‘s line for supporters of the government shutdown.

“I don’t really have a solution,” Scott began. “But I am in support of it because I’m waiting for the second coming. We just celebrated the first coming of Jesus. But Jesus is coming back.”

“And as crazy as the government is, it’s getting us closer,” Scott added. “Now the solution to having a bill pay for the wall, Trump can do this by going after every business in America that got a tax break if they have any ties to any sister/baby companies off of them that have hired any illegal aliens in the past.”

The caller argued that Trump could “take that tax break back” and “build us a golden wall across the Mexican and Canadian border.”

“I want it shutdown because I can’t wait for when Jesus comes back and gets the righteous real people and takes them to heaven,” Scott opined. “And then we have a real big mess on this Earth.”

“Got your point, Scott,” McArdle said as he cut off the caller.

John Daniel Carothers #racist rawstory.com

A Tennessee man allegedly wrote a jailhouse letter to a white supremacist group admitting he burned a black man alive — and cited the Bible as one of his influences.

Nashville’s WTVF reported Monday that John Daniel Carothers, accused of murdering his black halfway house roommate Robert Miller in March, claimed the Bible is “for white people” and referenced the religious text in his alleged confession letter.

“I believe the Bible is about white people and for white people,” Carothers’ jailhouse letter read. “I am in the Rutherford County Jail for burning a black man I set on fire with lighter fluid poured on his head.”

After the sheriff’s department found the suspect’s apparent confession letter in the outgoing mail, prosecutors are now considering upping the charges against him using a hate crime “enhancement.”

WTVF noted that Tennessee does not have a specific hate crime statute, but that the U.S. Department of Justice may intervene — a move that could result in federal hate crime charges.

The report did not specify which white supremacist group Carothers reportedly addressed the letter to.

Courtland Sykes #sexist rawstory.com

Republican U.S. Senate candidate for Missouri Courtland Sykes blasted “women’s rights” this week.

In a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, Sykes said that he had been asked if he “supports women’s rights.”

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six,” Sykes said, referring to demands he makes of his girlfriend. “One that she fixes and one that I expect one day to have daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives.”

According to Sykes, feminists push an agenda that they “made up to suit their own nasty snake-filled heads.”

The candidate said that he hoped his daughters do not grow up to be “career obsessed banshees who forgo home life and children and the happiness of family to become nail-biting manophobic hell-bent feminist she devils who shriek from the top of a thousand tall buildings they are [SIC] think they could have leaped in a single bound — had men not been ‘suppressing them.’ It’s just nuts.”

Sykes ended his rant by insisting that he supports women’s rights “but not the kind that has suppressed natural womanhood for five long decades.”

“But good news,” he concluded. “They’re finished. Ask Hillary.”

An Irish priest has put out an urgent call for backup to help with the growing demand for exorcisms in the country, according to reports.

“It’s only in recent years that the demand [for exorcisms] has risen exponentially,” Father Pat Collins said, adding that anyone who doesn’t see the need for more exorcists is “out of touch with reality.” Collins wrote an open letter to Irish Bishops asking them to begin training more priests to deal with exorcisms, and cited the International Association of Exorcists' belief that demonic activity has increased substantially in recent years.

Each Catholic diocese in Ireland is required to have a trained exorcist who can identify whether a person is suffering from mental illness or has been possessed.

Collins has been speaking out about the activities of what he has called “the evil one” for years. He is widely considered Ireland’s most prominent exorcist, and he has also advocated for the church to take a more active role in demon hunting.

Mark Taylor #fundie rawstory.com

Self-styled evangelical Christian “prophet” Mark Taylor bragged that his prayers caused Hillary Clinton to collapse from pneumonia during the 2016 presidential campaign, Right Wing Watch reported Wednesday.

Taylor has never been to Bible school or seminary, but the retired firefighter claims the Lord told him in 2011 that Donald Trump would be elected president.

Appearing on the “Omega Man Radio” show, Taylor claimed he led a nationwide prayer call asking God to “remove all those that are corrupt in our government and in leadership across this country, at every level of government.”

“I hung up the phone at 9:17. Twenty minutes later, Hilary Clinton collapsed for the entire world to see,” Taylor claimed.

“Now that was prophetic on a couple of different accounts: One, that shows you the power and authority we have with 10,000 people in agreement, with one heart, one mind and one accord in unity … The second thing it was prophetic for, when she fell, that was a prophetic sign that the Clinton machine and all those attached to it were going to collapse,” Taylor continued.

Taylor is the author of The Trump Prophecies: The Astonishing True Story of the Man Who Saw Tomorrow… and What He Says Is Coming Next.

In December, Taylor foretold that President Trump will cure cancer and Alzheimers, but not until his second term.

In August, Taylor had an epiphany about a global conspiracy to change voters’ DNA in a plot to manufacture opposition to President Trump.

“I believe what happened on November 8 is the enemy has literally sent out a frequency,” Taylor said, “and it agitated and took control, basically, of those who have their DNA that was turned over to the enemy. That’s what’s happening. The Illuminati, the Freemasons, all these people, their main goal is to change the DNA of man and they’re doing it through these frequencies.”

Taylor believes broadcasting audio at 440 Hz “changes your DNA, which is the goal of the Freemasons, the Illuminati; they want you part of that Illuminati bloodline.”

Disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker stoked fears of presidential assassination while claiming that their grandchildren of his audience could face eternal damnation unless they call a 1-888 phone number and send him $60 (plus shipping) for a bucket of pancake mix.

“You know, if they kill our president, or they destroy him or whatever,” Bakker worried. “If we elect the other side, I mean they’ve come out against God.”

“I think maybe Trump is here to give us time to get ready, because all hell is going to break loose,” Bakker suggested.

“We’re not going to have the anti-Christ to show up to get the sign of the mark of our beast on our forehead, it won’t happen without hunger,” he claimed.

Bakker resigned from his Assemblies of God ministries after facing accusations of drugging and raping an employee. He was convicted of fraud and imprisoned.

Pastor Frank Raddish #fundie rawstory.com

A South Carolina preacher is continuing to support Republican senate nominee Roy Moore in Alabama, an apparent reversal of his previously claimed focus on wanting to protect children from sexual predators.

Pastor Franklin Raddish of the Capitol Hill Independent Baptist Ministries has dismissed recent allegations of powerful men as attacks that are part of a so-called “war on men,” AL.com reports.

“More women are sexual predators than men,” Rev. Raddish claimed.

“Women are chasing young boys up and down the road, but we don’t hear about that because it’s not PC,” Rev. Raddish alleged.

In 2004, Rev. Raddish organized a protest at the Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton Tennessee in 2004, using the site of the Scopes Monkey Trial to highlight his opposition to pedophilia to rationalize his anti-LGBT bigotry.

“These people aren’t the good neighbor next door, they’re out to target young children. They must recruit their heritage,” Rev. Raddish charged. “As many of them will die from AIDS, the only way they can keep their numbers is to recruit. Pedophiles and men dressing like ladies, their objective is recruitment of children.”

“The pedophiles will be here tomorrow. The men who dress like women will be here,” Rev. Raddish worried. “The world wants to educate our children to be tolerant of homosexuals. The homosexuals can’t grow in number unless they recruit. How do they recruit? They sodomize. That’s the only way.”

Multiple women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct from Moore that targeted high school girls when he was a 30-year-old assistant district attorney. Moore has denied the allegations.

The fusillade of Jones outrage accused liberals of attempting to sexualize children with volunteers reading books at public libraries, according to Right Wing Watch. Jones became so unhinged he accused drag queens of being pedophiles who “have their way with children” in “space alien” and “demon goblin” outfits, referring to the costumes drag queens wear. He also included something about baby giraffes.

“Imagine if someone in a demon outfit, showed up next to a baby giraffe and said, ‘Hi, I’m a demon. Be inclusive. Don’t be mean to me. Let me wear demon horns and come up and look like a complete alien from another planet,’” the torrent of rage continued.

“They dress up like space aliens all over the United States of America and all over the world,” Jones continued. “In horrible demon psychopath outfits that make Pennywise look beautiful. And they show up and they have their way with children, in demon outfits. I mean, if you’ve got men that look like 400-pound goblin demons with your children, there’s nothing you won’t put up with.”

The Long Beach public library has a Drag Queen Story Hour for any parents interested in bringing their children. It’s not a mandatory activity, nor were there demonic teachings involved, according to Snopes.

“There isn’t a species on the planet that would let something that looks like a space alien get up close to its kids,” Jones shouted, ignoring the characters dressed up at theme parks. “But only in America does it happen and I’m sick of it.”

“I’m tired of it right now! I can’t handle it anymore!” Jones screamed.

He then stood and picked up his chair, presumably throwing it into his camera operators and staff, however, the video quickly cuts to his logo.

Jones lost primary custody of his children in a very public court battle in which his online persona was used as an example that he was unfit to be a parent.

Delta County Joint School District No. 50 #fundie rawstory.com

An atheist teenager is suing her former high school and alleging that its teachers intentionally flunked her due to her views on religion — and ruined her chances of getting into the college of her choice.

The Denver Post reports that Cidney Fisk this week filed a lawsuit against the Delta County Joint School District No. 50 by claiming that her Christian teachers sabotaged her chances of getting into college because she criticized them for allegedly using their classes to spread their religious views.

Specifically, the Denver Post reports that the lawsuit claims that “her opposition to teachers, school board members and administrators, who she claims espoused religious views in school settings and meetings put her at odds with them.” As an example, the lawsuit cites a school board member who “once stated her ‘Christian’ belief at a school board meeting that ‘transgender students should be castrated.'”

What’s more, the lawsuit alleges that a school counselor told her that she could lose her positions in student government organizations — and even jeopardize potential college scholarships — if she continued her outspoken activism.

The lawsuit also claims that school officials barred her from joining the National Honor Society even though her 4.1 grade point average entering her senior year easily qualified her for joining the group. Additionally, school officials gave her bad reviews that hurt her chances of getting into two colleges, the suit alleges.

“Defendants retaliated upon plaintiff Fisk, threatened, punished and censored her, for expressing her opinions on religion, abortion, sex education, and drug education in an attempt to chill, deter and restrict (her) from freely expressing her opinions,” the suit claims.

Louisiana state Rep. Kenny Havard (R) on Monday called for the state to end tax subsidies for the Saints NFL team because some players have refused to stand for the national anthem.

In a statement on Monday, Havard asserted that taxpayers should not have to “subsidize” the protests.

“The very reason they have the privilege and opportunity to play professional football while being paid millions is because someone in uniform died protecting their right to do so,” he opined. “It’s a disgrace to the men and women of this nation who have sacrificed so much.”

According to Havard, “Disrespecting our national anthem and flag in the name of social justice is the highest form of hypocrisy.”

“It is time for taxpayers to quit subsidizing protest on big boy playgrounds,” he insisted. “I believe in the right to protest but not at a taxpayer subsidized sporting event.”

A stadium lease agreement is expected to provide the New Orleans Saints franchise more than $400 million in subsidies by 2025.

“Do it on your own time,” the lawmaker concluded.

George Brown #sexist rawstory.com

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol official reportedly told women that the best way not to get raped by an officer was to “follow the law.”

In recent months, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer and an Oklahoma City Police officer have been accused of repeatedly raping women, often during traffic stops.

After a Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy was arrested last week for sexually assaulting a woman while responding to a 911 call, Tulsa NBC News affiliate KJRH decided to ask the Oklahoma Highway Patrol how to stay safe during a traffic stop.

The department noted that troopers should always be in uniform, and that women were allowed to keep their car door locked, and to speak with officers through a cracked window. A trooper should rarely ask a person to come back to the patrol car, OHP advised.

“There are certain situations where we do that,” Capt. George Brown told KJRH. “If someone doesn’t have a driver’s license on their person. We asked for an ID or driver’s licence, if they can’t provide it, rather than stand outside the car writing [a ticket], which puts us in a bad location, we may ask a female back to the car so we can get her information.”

The KJRH anchor said that Brown concluded with this advice: “The captain says anything that happens inside a troopers car is videotaped, and he says that supervisors do review those tapes.”

“He says the best tip that he can give is to follow the law in the first place so you don’t get pulled over,” the anchor added.

Brown told KWTV that OHP was working to regain the public’s trust.

“There are entirely more good officers than there are the few bad apples that exist out there, and we want people to know that,” he explained. “We have a lot of good troopers, a lot of good officers out there doing a lot of good things daily, and we want to continue that and have the public continue their trust in us.”

Jeff Mateer, who has been nominated by President Donald Trump for a federal judgeship, advocated debunked “conversion therapy” for LGBT people and called transgender children part of “Satan’s plan.”

A CNN investigation found that Mateer came under fire from LGBT groups while working as general counsel for a conservative organization known as the Liberty Institute.

According to CNN, the attorney discussed transgender children in a 2015 speech titled “The Church and Homosexuality.”

“In Colorado, a public school has been sued because a first grader and I forget the sex, she’s a girl who thinks she’s a boy or a boy who thinks she’s a girl, it’s probably that, a boy who thinks she’s a girl,” Mateer was quoted as saying. “And the school said, ‘Well, she’s not using the girl’s restroom.’ And so she has now sued to have a right to go in. Now, I submit to you, a parent of three children who are now young adults, a first grader really knows what their sexual identity? I mean it just really shows you how Satan’s plan is working and the destruction that’s going on.”

Mateer went on to call same-sex marriage “disgusting.”

“I’ve learned words I didn’t know. I mean, other than…my assistants here, have you ever heard the word ‘throuple’?” he opined. “‘Throuple’ so that’s three people coming together of different sexes, maybe mixed sexes. Them coming together. There are people who marry themselves. Somebody wanted to marry a tree. People marrying their pets. It’s just like — you know, you read the New Testament and you read about all the things and you think, ‘Oh, that’s not going on in our community.’ Oh yes it is. We’re back to that time where debauchery rules.”

That same year, Mateer complained about states banning so-called conversion therapy for LGBT people.

“[T]hat’s been outlawed in at least two states and then in some local areas. So they’re invading that area,” he lamented.

As video Hermansson provided to the New York Times shows, he got one of the group’s highest-ranking members — Alt-Right Corporation board member Jason Reza Jorjani — to admit his “final solution” for minorities.

“It’s gonna end with the expulsion of the majority of the migrants, including [Muslim] citizens,” Jorjani told an undercover Hermansson at a pub near the Empire State Building in New York City. “It’s gonna end with concentration camps and expulsions and war at the cost of a few hundred million people.”

“We will have a Europe, in 2050, where the bank notes have Adolf Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great,” he continued. “And Hitler will be seen like that: like Napoleon, like Alexander, not like some weird monster who is unique in his own category — no, he is just going to be seen as a great European leader.”

Jorjani also claimed to have connections within the Trump administration, and to even have spoken to the president himself.

“The scary thing about the Alt Right Corp and Jason Jorjani is that they’re building a media empire,” Hermansson said at the beginning of the video, citing the AltRight.com website Jorjani runs with the help of notorious figures like Richard Spencer.

Lisa Kauffman #sexist rawstory.com

A sentencing hearing in Missoula County, Montana, grew heated this week when the defense lawyer for 26-year-old defendant Justin Griffith accused his victims — including one 13-year-old girl — of acting as “temptresses.”

The Missoulian reports that defense attorney Lisa Kauffman told Missoula County District Court Judge Robert Deschamps this week that a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by Griffith looked much older than her age would indicate.

“She looks and acts like she’s 18 years old,” Kaufman said during the hearing. “You should see the pictures of her and the hair and the makeup.”

Griffith pleaded guilty to felony sexual assault earlier this year for having sex with a 13-year-old who was a patient at a teenage addiction recovery center where Griffith was an employee. A second girl at the facility also alleged that Griffith had raped her, although those charges were dropped as part of Griffith’s guilty plea.

During one particularly heated exchange with deputy county attorney Brian Lowney during the sentencing hearing, Kaufman argued that Griffith was simply not trained to deal with young girls at the treatment facility that may have tried to seduce him.

“It is hardly a training issue not to have sex with a 13-year-old resident,” Lowney shot back.

Judge Dechamps agreed with Lowney’s reasoning, and pointed out that Griffith’s long history of sexual encounters showed he wasn’t just some naive, inexperienced young man.

“He’s been around the block and he knows the score,” the judge said.

“So was she,” Kauffman responded.

During a subsequent recess, Kauffman then asked Lowney if he’d ever considered the roles that Griffith’s victims had played in their own assaults.

“How about victims as temptresses, what do you think about that?” she asked.

The 13-year-old victim’s mother, who was present at the hearing, objected to having her daughter described that way, and Kauffman quickly apologized.

Unnamed juror and Georgia courts #racist rawstory.com

The state of Georgia is set to execute a black man convicted of murder this month, despite the fact that one of the jurors in his trial admitted to voting for the death penalty if defendants were “n*ggers.”

Via anti-death penalty activist Sister Helen Prejean, Georgia has scheduled 59-year-old Keith Leroy Tharpe’s execution for September 26, almost 27 years to the day after he murdered his sister-in-law and attempted to kidnap his wife after she had left him one month earlier.

As recounted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tharpe’s attorneys have argued that his death sentence should be thrown out because one juror in the trial showed extreme racial prejudice toward him.

Specifically, the juror told lawyers after the trial had ended that he believed there were two type of African Americans: “Good black folks” and “n*ggers.” The juror claimed that he saw Tharpe as an example of the latter, although he said the family of Tharpe’s victim was an example of “good” black people.

In fact, the juror said that if Tharpe’s victim’s family “had been the type Tharpe is, then picking between life or death for Tharpe wouldn’t have mattered as much.”

Tharpe’s attorneys have tried to use this juror’s account to reopen his case, but so far courts have refused. While there doesn’t seem to be any question about Tharpe’s guilt, there is question over whether racial prejudice was responsible for the jury handing down a sentence that would not have been given to a white man convicted of the same crime.

Robert Belt #fundie rawstory.com

An off-duty West Virginia deputy allegedly announced “f*ggots will burn in hell” after an openly gay high school student boarded the bus he was driving.

Clay County sheriff’s deputy Robert Belt was dressed in full uniform when he made comments Sept. 5 over the school bus intercom as the student boarded and sat down, according to a Facebook post by the Nelson County (West Virginia) Democratic Organization.

“No f*ggot activity will be permitted on this bus,” Belt said, according to witnesses. “In my Bible it states that ‘f*ggots will burn in hell,’ and I will not condone it.”

A parent heard about the alleged comments Friday and reported the deputy to the Clay County High School vice principal, Alan Tanner, who then notified the director of transportation.

The school superintendent confirmed the incident was under internal investigation but declined to comment further, reported WSAZ-TV.

“All of our employees are expected to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for all of our students,” said Joe Paxton, superintendent of Clay County schools. “As the Employee Code of Conduct mandates, the school system expects all of our employees to exhibit professional behavior by showing positive examples of communication, fairness, and language. Also, as required in the Code of Conduct, the school system expects all of our employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment, free from harassment, intimidation, bullying, and free from bias and discrimination.”

Three students have given statements to the school counselor about the incident, according to the Democratic group’s Facebook post.

Belt continues to drive a school bus part-time and work full-time as a deputy, the social media post said.

He ran unsuccessfully for Clay County sheriff last year, and he was named in a civil rights lawsuit eight years ago.

A Clay County man accused Belt of engaging in a harassment campaign after he asked the deputy to remove his boots when he came to pick up some items belonging to a mutual relative.

“‘F*ck you and your white carpet,'” Belt told the man, according to the federal civil rights suit.

The suit claims Belt then beat the man with a flashlight, and he says the deputy unlawfully stopped him multiple times and physically assaulted him over a period of months.

It’s not clear how that 2009 suit was eventually resolved.

Inappropriate over-reaction to a storm in a teacup. The witch-hunt mentality probably arose as the result of a conservative American-style Christian upbringing that views all expression of sexuality as "evil", regardless of the consequences for the actors and any of their recipients.

People who download child porn are not necessarily the ones who act on it. It could have been a useful release for a guy with feelings he needed to contain in the real world. I am repulsed by people who indulge pornographic fantasies but it is their life, not mine. If they are doing no harm to others, or to themselves, then I have no right to use my repulsion to condemn or punish them. That is a moral maturational level that this Federal Agent has apparently not yet reached.

The acts of this School Principle are far less serious that the rampant active sex abuse of children by Catholic clergy, and the less frequent, but also egregious, sexual exploitation of parishioners by non-Catholic clergy.

In this particular case there appears to be no evidence that the legally tortured Principal did anything more than just look at electronic images. Unless such evidence has been repressed (and why would the media want to suppress such salacious material?) there did not seem to be any people harmed by what was
happening - until this self-righteous authoritarian started formal legal proceedings. It was =that= act that caused an avalanche of damage. It smashed friendships, broke up a marriage, deprived children of a father, caused irreparable damage to the mental well-being of everyone in that family, deprived a school of its Principle, and probably unnecessarily upset a lot of the kids at that school and their parents. If we look at the results, then this rigid FBI agent is the real criminal, He is the one causing all the harm.

In the higher stages of moral development people recognize that it is the consequences of actions that make them "moral" or "immoral". If the only thing harmed is the transgression of some asserted set of "absolute morals" on which there has never been anything close to a universal consensus, or the sensibilities of some cult-specific version of a supernatural being for which there is even less valid evidence, then we are looking at the operation of moral reasoning that is at the immature end of the normal moral maturational ladder.

Sam McLure #fundie rawstory.com

A man vying for the position of top cop in Alabama toed the ethical line this weekend when he revealed personal information about an abortion provider.

As Hemant Mehta of The Friendly Atheist reports at Patheos, Sam McLure, an Alabama attorney general candidate, linked to a site that “doxxes” or reveals contact and personal information of abortion providers in the state to promote his hard-line anti-abortion agenda.

“This woman killed babies on Friday in Montgomery,” McClure’s Facebook post linking to an abortion doxxing website read. “Can anyone publicly defend why she should not be prosecuted for murder?”

As Mehta points out, McLure’s platform for Alabama’s AG appears to be built entirely on anti-abortion rhetoric. In another post on his campaign page, he claims legalized abortion is a myth.

“In other eclipse news,” McClure wrote the day of the total solar eclipse, “Alabama’s insane addiction to Fed $ is only overshadowed by the urban legend that Roe v Wade is the law of the land.”

McClure is a member of the Alabama chapter of the Constitution Party, a Republican group that pushes a pro-Christian agenda.

Along with running for AG, McClure is president of the Birmingham-based Adoption Law Firm and anti-abortion group Proposal 16.

Rolando Pablos #fundie rawstory.com

Those who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana are only beginning to see the way the flood waters have destroyed their homes. Many families tried to ride it out, only to be rescued when the rising waters forced them onto their roof. Thousands escaped with only their lives and the clothes on their backs, losing everything they own.

But according to Secretary of State Rolando Pablos (R-TX), they don’t need any help. As Patheos reported, they just need a little more Jesus.

Quebec’s Minister of International Relations Christine St-Pierre called Pablos to express her sorrow and condolences on behalf of the people of the Canadian province. She also offered equipment and manpower.

Pablos turned it down. Instead he asked for “prayers from the people of Quebec,” the minister relayed.

Understandably, the neighbor to the north was shocked.

“It was a conversation about how devastating the situation is and we want to express our support to the people of Texas,” she told CBC News in an interview.

Jason Spencer #racist rawstory.com

A Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives issued a veiled threat of lynching to a black former colleague who expressed anti-Confederate memorial sentiments on his Facebook.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia State Rep. Jason Spencer (R) did exactly that on a Facebook post when former state representative LaDawn Jones expressed a distaste for a photo he took with a Confederate monument.

“This is Georgia’s history,” Spencer wrote on a post accompanied by a selfie he took with a South Georgia monument to Confederate president Jefferson Davis.

Jones, who formerly served in the state legislature until last year, questioned whether state tax dollars help pay for the upkeep of the memorial, which includes the house Davis fled to after the Civil War ended. A few comments in, Spencer began making threatening allusions.

“Continue your quixotic journey into South Georgia and it will not be pleasant,” Spencer replied. “The truth. Not a warning. Those folks won’t put up with it like they do in Atlanta.”

“I can guarantee you won’t be met with torches but something a lot more definitive,” he continued, responding to Jones’ comment about the store-bought tiki torches used by the white supremacists at the Charlottesville rally earlier this month.

After another person commented about the differences between Atlanta (a city that has a large African American population) and the rest of Georgia, Spencer agreed.

“They will go missing in the Okefenokee [swamp],” he wrote. “Too many necks they are red around here. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about ’em.”

Jones didn’t back down from Spencer’s intimidation.

“Sounds like a threat of physical violence … is that what we are doing now?” she wrote. “Desperate times call for desperate measures huh? Afraid of what is going to happen in southern GA? I saw those white supremacists crying when sh*t really hit the fan.”

Jimmy Marr #racist rawstory.com

Drivers on Oregon’s Interstate 5 were shocked over the weekend to see anti-Semitic banners being displayed on overpasses — and now local media has figured out who is responsible.

According to OregonLive, neo-Nazi Jimmy Marr is the man behind the banners that read “UNJEW HUMANITY,” “Eclipse Whitey,” and “Jewish Financing Available.” On Sunday he tweeted images of two more banners — reading “Bolshevik Jews perpetrated the Holodomor” and “Resist Racial Eclipse.”

Marr is known for promoting the white genocide conspiracy theory, the belief that multiculturalism is a secret Jewish plot to wipe out the white race.

Many California tourists are traveling up Interstate 5 to get a better view of Monday’s solar eclipse.

Beth and Michael Dershowitz of Sacramento were driving with their children Saturday when the saw the banners.

“I cannot believe that we still have to face this vicious anti-semitism in such a public place in 2017,” Beth Dershowitz told Willamette Week. “My husband wanted to confront the men behind this, but I was afraid for our children in the car with us. Just another day in Trump’s America.”

Marr previously made headlines last year for his truck, which he covered in pro-Trump slogans and racist messages. He was also arrested for disrupting a rally against hate.

Marr did not respond OregonLive’s requests for comments, but the publication notes that his voicemail message says, “Leave us a message after the tone. Tell us what you’re doing to fight white genocide.”

Oregon Governor Kate Brown denounced Marr’s banners on Saturday, saying “hateful rhetoric like this has no place in our” state.

Michael James Holt #sexist rawstory.com

A white supremacist admitted to stockpiling guns and plotting a mass shooting out of sexual frustration.

Michael James Holt appeared Friday in an Australian court for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to a variety of firearms charges after police found his cache of homemade guns two years ago at his home, his grandfather’s home and a hotel, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

The 26-year-old later pleaded guilty to possessing and sharing child pornography after police found those images while investigating the shooting plot.

Prosecutors said the New South Australia man admitted to planning a mass shooting at a mall and also wanted to shoot teachers and students at a nearby school.

Holt admitted to an “infatuation” with neo-Nazi ideology and told a counselor that he believed Adolf Hitler was “the greatest person to live,” prosecutors told the sentencing judge.

Prosecutors presented more than 40 pages of text messages from Holt revealing his plan to shoot tourists and police, the newspaper reported — and he blamed his violent urges on his inability to find a willing sexual partner.

“Gonna have to just start killing people if I don’t get laid soon,” Holt said in one text message.

Defense attorneys said Holt had been obsessed with guns since he was 5 years old, partially as a result of his autism.

The judge compared Holt to a mass shooter in Port Arthur who killed 35 people in 1996, and said his obsessions and interests were “deeply disturbing.”

Holt will be formally sentenced Sept. 29.

Brentwood Academy #fundie rawstory.com

An exclusive Christian private school in a wealthy suburb of Nashville is accused of covering-up up the repeated sexual assaults of a 12-year-old boy.

The Brentwood Academy is being sued for $60 million for allowing four eighth-grade bullies to repeatedly sexually assault a sixth-grade student, the Tennessean reports.

The lawsuit was filed by the mother of the victim.

Four male students are alleged to have “conspired to engage in male on male sexual harassment, sexual assault and/or rape upon John Doe in the locker room not supervised by an adult,” according to the lawsuit. “(The boy) would place his penis before John Doe and forcibly penetrated it into the mouth of Plaintiff John Doe without consenting claiming ‘eat it, eat it, eat it, open your mouth, accept it.'”

The same student is alleged to have bragged he “f—ed that boy up the ass and stuck a Gatorade bottle in him.”

Brentwood Academy Headmaster Curtis G. Masters allegedly told the victim to “turn the other cheek” and that, “everything in God’s kingdom happens for a reason.”

The headmaster allegedly said he considered the allegations to be “boys being boys and he could not investigate each of those and run a school.”

When the victim’s mother wanted to report the sexual assault to law enforcement, former Brentwood employee Chris Roberts — the victim’s counselor at Daystar Counseling — allegedly responded, “this isn’t how Christian institutions handle these things.”

“In addition to Masters, middle school director Nancy Brasher, administrator and middle school athletic director Buddy Alexander, assistant basketball coach Lyle Husband and sixth grade basketball coach Mike Vazquez, who is also Masters’ son-in-law, are named as individual defendants in the suit,” the Tennessean explained.

The school’s motto is, “Vivat Veritas” (Let Truth Prevail).

The Boone County Arkansas Sheriff’s Office booked Pastor Larry Berkley on charges of failure to appear, the latest in a three year legal battle against the former pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in Harrison, AR.

“A Harrison Police daily log of activity shows Boone County authorities contacted the HPD about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday for warrant confirmation on Berkley, 38, for sexual solicitation, four counts of first-degree sexual assault, seven counts of second-degree sexual assault, six counts of knowingly furnishing alcohol to a minor, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of loaning pornography to minors,” the Harrison Daily reports.

Berkley is accused of furnishing drugs and alcohol to teenage boys that he sexually assaulted.

After posting bond in Arkansas, Pastor Berkley was indicted by a Lauderdale County, Tennessee grand jury on two counts of rape, four counts of aggravated statutory rape, sexual battery by an authority figure and statutory rape by an authority figure. The charges date to the time Berkley worked as a pastor at Victory Baptist Church in Henning, Tennessee.

As Raw Story noted in 2014, church officials in Tennessee declined to say why Berkley had been ousted as Pastor.

“One of the victims told police Berkley had taken him to the funeral home where he worked part time and showed him a dead body,” the Harrison Daily reported. “The victim said Berkley had stored marijuana in a very expensive casket he didn’t think people could afford to buy.”

“I’m sure this is on Donald’s mind, he never stops thinking,” she explained. “But at the same time, this is an agenda.”

“Here is my concern,” Pirro told the Fox & Friends hosts. “If they end up with an indictment against a family member, just to get at Donald Trump because they couldn’t get at him, there is going to be a real uproar, a real uprising in this country.”

Pirro went on to add, “I was a prosecutor for 32 years, you can indict a ham sandwich. The only person in that grand jury is the district attorney who is interacting all of those grand jurors on what the law is — and the body language is clear!”

A police officer from Estherwood, Louisiana has been fired from his job after he posted a racist meme on his Facebook page depicting a mother drowning her daughter for dating a black child.

Local news station KADN reports that Wayne Welsh, the assistant chief at the Estherwood Police Department, posted a meme this past Saturday that depicted a woman drowning a young girl in a bathtub with the caption, “When your daughter’s first crush is a little negro boy.”

Welsh quickly realized that the meme was inappropriate and deleted it, but by that point it had already been seen by someone in the community, who reported it to the department.

Estherwood Police Chief Ernest Villejoin said he was shocked when he saw what Welsh had posted, and he immediately took action to dismiss him.

“When I found out about it, I couldn’t believe I had to call him,” Villejoin said. “I called him at work and asked him what the hell is going on.”

Villejoin suspended the officer, who subsequently resigned his post. Despite the racist content of the meme, however, Villejoin said that Welsh was not a racist person.

“I know Wayne didn’t do this on purpose,” he said. “He didn’t do this offend anybody. I apologize to anybody that it offended, believe me.”

United HealthCare #fundie rawstory.com

An insurer denied HIV medication to a gay man for allegedly “engaging in high-risk homosexual behavior.”

A letter from United HealthCare posted in a Facebook group for HIV awareness showed the insurer declined to pay for the man’s prescription for Truvada, which treats and reduces the risk of HIV infection and would cost up to $1,500 a month out of pocket.

“This decision is based on health plan criteria for Truvada,” the letter reads. “The information sent in shows you are using this medicine for engaging in High risk homosexual behavior.”

The insurer tells the man his plan covers Truvada only if used to treat HIV infection, reduce the risk from possible HIV exposure or potential HIV exposure for certain high-risk patients – but the man was told he didn’t fit any of those criteria.

The letter claims the decision falls under New York state law governing health care coverage — but HIV activist Jeremiah Johnson said that’s not true.

“This was a malicious attempt to discourage PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) uptake by people who need it most,” said Johnson, of the Treatment Action Group.

PrEP intervention, usually available as the oral medication Truvada, is manufactured by Gilead Sciences, Inc., which says the drug is among the most expensive they make.

Johnson said the man’s doctor appealed the coverage denial, and United HealthCare ultimately paid for the drugs — but he said the episode highlighted significant barriers to treatment.

Truvada must be ordered online and delivered by mail, which Johnson said was problematic for anyone trying to safeguard their privacy, and requires an intricate report filed four times a year by their physicians.

“This is an enormous barrier for some people,” he said.

United HealthCare has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Raw Story CEO John Byrne is the founder of Prevention Access Campaign, a nonprofit focused on improving education and access to biomedical HIV prevention, including PrEP, and United HealthCare covers Raw Story employees.

The PrEP intervention is used by up to 100,000 patients in the U.S., and can reduce the risk of HIV infection by 99 percent.

Bay View Association #fundie rawstory.com

A resort founded by Methodists in Michigan is being sued because of its policy that only lets Christians own property within its community.

MLive.com reports that the Bay View Association, a cottage resort located in Emmet County, Michigan, is being sued by an organization called the Bay View Chautauqua Inclusiveness Group that objects to its restrictions on who is allowed to own property there.

Founded in 1875, the Bay View Association requires all property owners to be practicing Christians. Additionally, the resort places restrictions on what kinds of Christians can own property, including a quota on the number of Catholics who can own property.

The association even used to have a rule that only white people could own property on the resort, but it officially scrapped that restriction in 1959.

Sarah Prescott, the attorney who is filing the suit against the resort on behalf of the Bay View Chautauqua Inclusiveness Group, tells MLive.com that even some resort members are upset by the rules because they prevent them from passing their cottages onto relatives who are of the “wrong” religion.

Bay View Association Executive Director Mike Spencer defended his organization’s restrictions, although he acknowledged that they might not be popular with many people.

“Like most private associations, there are specific requirements for membership,” he said in an official statement. “Our membership requirements have been part of our history and we understand that some of our members or the general public may disagree with them. The Bay View Association of the United Methodist Church is an ecumenical, private, voluntary membership, organization.”

Catherine Templeton #racist rawstory.com

South Carolinian politicians aren’t known for their political correctness — but one gubernatorial candidate really took the cake.

As reported by the Charleston Post-Courier, gubernatorial candidate Catherine Templeton is already grabbing headlines, first for asserting that she is “proud of the Confederacy,” and again by saying she thinks transgender people should use the bathrooms associated with the gender they were assigned at birth.

When asked about her position on “Southern heritage and Southern defense” by a man who identified himself as a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans group, Templeton said that no Confederate monuments would be removed on her watch.

“I don’t think there’s anything else to say about it,” Templeton said during the forum on August 1. “You cannot rewrite history. I don’t care whose feelings it hurts. You cannot rewrite history.”

When asked if she would “buckle down like North Carolina did” or “stand up for the Lord’s word” by a voter at the same forum, Templeton responded that she believes trans people should use bathrooms that correlate to their birth gender — but didn’t mention whether she would try to make that a law.

As the Post-Courier noted, her comments about the Confederacy particularly offended African-American lawmakers in the state, who are still reeling from Dylann Roof’s racist mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the heart of Charleston in 2015.

“I don’t think she understands the diversity we have in South Carolina and that we’re not all a bunch of flag-waving yahoos,” Joe Darby, a presiding elder for the AME church in the region, told the Post-Courier. “When you elevate the Confederacy, you stomp on the memories of those who were subjugated, the slaves. She’s stomping on my ancestors. If she’s proud of her heritage over nine lives, it’s a shame.”

Ronnie Hyde #fundie rawstory.com

A Florida youth pastor charged with the cold-case murder of one teen and the sexual abuse of others wants his guns back while he awaits trial.

Ronnie Hyde pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and child pornography charges in March related to the 1994 slaying of 16-year-old Fred Laster, whose dismembered body was found in a Dumpster.

Laster’s decapitated torso was found behind a trash bin near Lake City, but the remains went unidentified until a DNA test in 2015 matched the slain teen to his twin sister.

Police said the 61-year-old Hyde befriended the runaway teen more than two decades ago as youth pastor at Strength for Living Church in Yulee, prosecutors said.

Investigators strongly suggested they suspect Hyde — who had been a counselor at Crosswater Community Church in Nocatee up to his arrest — is a suspect in other unsolved cases by plastering his face on eight billboards seeking information in the Jacksonville area.

New court documents show that prosecutors are also gathering evidence in two additional sex abuse cases dating back to the early 1990s.

A man came forward after Hyde’s arrest in March and said the former youth pastor had mentored him as a runaway in 1992, brought him to his house, used the guns to impress him, showed him pornography and sexually abused him.

Hyde’s attorneys are seeking the return of some of the evidence — including a Toyota Scion, firearms, guitar equipment, a cell phone and a wallet — gathered from the former church leader’s home, which was demolished in May as a biohazard.

FBI agents who raided the home found multiple code violations, such as no running water and a bathtub used as a toilet.

Prosecutors said they’re willing to return Hyde’s car, wallet and music equipment, but not the smart phones or guns.

The city held no condemnation proceedings on the home, and a demolition permit was issued at the request of a Hyde family attorney as part of a property sale to a new owner.

Defense attorneys want Hyde, who had previously been named in an international child exploitation case, to be tried separately on the murder and child pornography charges.

Hyde, who is due back in court next month, remains jailed without bond.

Word of Faith Fellowship #fundie rawstory.com

A North Carolina church that is already under investigation for kidnapping a gay man and attempting to beat his homosexuality out of him is once again in the spotlight after it was revealed that church members have been importing worshipers from Brazil and turning them into slaves.

According to the Associated Press, the Word of Faith Fellowship recruits young members from two affiliated churches in Brazil to come to the U.S. on tourist and student visas where they are put to work on the church’s 35-acre compound in Spindale for no pay.

One man, identified as Andre Oliveira, told the AP that he was forced to work 15 hours a day, usually for no pay, cleaning offices and warehouses owned by the evangelical church. He well also forced to work at private businesses owned by some of the church’s ministers. Olivera stated that failure to comply resulted in beatings and shaming from the pulpit.

“They kept us as slaves,” Oliveira explained. “We were expendable. We meant nothing to them. Nothing. How can you do that to people — claim you love them and then beat them in the name of God?”

According to AP, “Under U.S. law, visitors on tourist visas are prohibited from performing work for which people normally would be compensated. Those on student visas are allowed some work, under circumstances that were not met at Word of Faith Fellowship.”

Former congregants who came from Brazil said that they had their passports taken away and lived in “horrific” living conditions, with as many as eight people living in the basement of a church leader’s home. What little money they were paid was immediately returned to the church to pay for their living expenses.

“Brazilians came here for labor. I’m telling you, that’s it,” claimed Thiago Silva who was recruited at age 18. He called the treatment “a violation of human rights.”

The church is currently being investigated by the U.S. Attorney in Charlotte for crimes that may go back years and involve hundreds of young Brazilians.

Gordon College #sexist rawstory.com

Despite showing his true colors early on, a private college in Massachusetts failed to discipline a student accused of rape by multiple people until years after the fact.

According to a ThinkProgress report, former Gordon College student Mischael Celestin raped, assaulted or attempted to assault multiple students over a period of years before school administrators did anything about it. This, despite Celestin having been expelled from Eastern Nazarene College for sexual assault prior to coming to Gordon in 2012. That fall, the first reported sexual assault allegation against him was recorded.

Though campus rape (and poor administrative response to it) is an epidemic that spans the religious-secular school divide, an author who spoke to ThinkProgress for their report on Gordon said its’ handling is particularly egregious at Christian schools.

“Because Christians tend to frame rape as a loss of purity rather than a loss of individual agency, they struggle with handling sexual assault cases appropriately,” Dianna Anderson, author of Damaged Goods: New Perspectives on Christian Purity, told ThinkProgress.

Although Gordon’s student handbook forbids “drunkenness” and “sexual relations outside marriage,” it claims to provide “amnesty” for both in cases of sexual assault. That “amnesty,” however, does not provide any guidelines on how the school handles rape.

Despite being accused repeatedly throughout his time at Gordon, it took a warning from a teacher at Eastern Nazarene and an arrest over trying to have sex with a 15-year-old girl. He was finally expelled in 2015 after his arrest.

Walmart apologized after a vendor described a product using a racial slur on the retailer’s website.

The unidentified vendor listed a netting weave cap for sale on Walmart’s website and described the item as “n****r brown,” reported the New York Post.

The racial slur was brought to Walmart’s attention on Twitter, where social media users asked the retailer for an explanation.

The same item, which is used to anchor hair extensions, is available for sale on Amazon, but doesn’t include a racial slur in the description.

The retailer explained that manufacturers and suppliers provide product descriptions, and that listing had not yet been verified by Walmart.

“We are very sorry and appalled that this third party seller listed their item with this description on our online marketplace,” spokeswoman Danit Marquardt wrote in a statement. “It is a clear violation of our policy, and has been removed, and we are investigating the seller to determine how this could have happened.”

Spanish Fort High School #fundie rawstory.com

An ultra-conservative reading list required by one Alabama school is raising eyebrows and raising concerns among parents.

The right-wing frequently accuses the schools of kowtowing to leftists politics by teaching things like science instead of religion and demanding youth refrain from reading classic literature that depicts a racist American history. But according to AL.com, it’s the far right that is demanding schools teach their philosophies.

The Baldwin School Board is getting involved after a summer reading list was given to students at Spanish Fort High School by teacher Gene Ponder. The list mandates that students choose one of the books from the list, which range from Rand Paul books to Ann Coulter. It also has Michael Savage’s 2006 book, Liberalism is a Mental Disorder listed as an option.

While political or controversial books aren’t unheard of, particularly in upper-level Advanced Placement classes, they’re typically taught alongside the contrasting view point. For example, The Bible is often taught with Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. That was not the case here.

Elizabeth Denham, whose son was in the AP class, posted the reading list on her Facebook page and blog saying that she contacted the school out of concern.

“I encourage my children to read things they disagree with,” she explained. “To listen to those with opposing perspectives. To be open to ideas other than theirs, but to stand up for their beliefs respectfully. This list did not encourage that philosophy. It presented one side. And one side filled with pop culture personalities who spew hate and rhetoric – not intellectual, respected authors who offer well-educated ideas from different points of view.”

While the board has received complaints, Baldwin County school board member David Cox doubted board members will care much.

“Generally speaking, I would think that needs to be left up to the individual school with the direction of the superintendent,” Cox told AL.com. Though he admitted he hasn’t reviewed the complaint.

“That’s something we leave to the superintendent and his staff and employees,” he continued. “Those need to stay at the school level or the superintendent, without board action. Until the superintendent says otherwise, it’s my opinion that it needs to be left up to him.”

The school board president — who actually lives in the town refused to comment.

Superintendent Eddie Tyler told the media this week that he did have a copy of the complaint and would review it.

You can see a copy of the complaint sent by parent Julia Coccaro below, which is concerned with more issues than just the book list. It includes the censorship of a yearbook section that removed the coming-out story of an LGBT teen and an incident in which a driver’s education teacher who spent an entire class period discussing his personal religious beliefs.

“It is also concerning that the superintendent was unable to bring himself to condemn books with titles like ‘Liberalism is a Mental Disorder’ when there are both liberals and students with mental illness attending classes within the Baldwin County School District,” the complaint explains. “The parents and students of Baldwin County expect more from our superintendent.”

Vicky Hartzler #fundie rawstory.com

A Republican lawmaker this week singled out transgender soldiers as a “threat” to the United States during an interview with Tony Perkins of the Family Research Center, a Christian organization that has for years fought against expanding rights for LGBT citizens.

As ThinkProgress documents, Perkins conducted an interview with Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) this week in which she said the prospect of transgender soldiers constituted a “domestic threat” to U.S. security.

“At a time when we should be focusing on the threats from North Korea, and Putin, and ISIS, we’re having to deal with a threat here at home?—?a domestic threat?—?of allowing transgenders in our service, which is a real problem because it impacts their readiness, and it’s a huge cost for our military,” she told Perkins.

Among other things, Hartzler said she feared surgeries for transgender troops would cost the military too much money, despite the fact that estimates by the RAND Corporation project that gender-transition-related health costs for the military would only go up by between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually if it allowed transgender people to serve openly.

Before ending her interview, Hartzler reiterated that her goal regarding transgender soldiers would be to “remove this threat from the national defense.”

Raw Story reached out to Hartzler’s office to elaborate on her view that transgender soldiers are a “threat” to the United States, but they did not return calls requesting comment.

“Paul Ryan is a c*ck, he’s a c*ck, get him out,” the intern said. “Paul Ryan: c*ck first and Yankee second.”

“The term ‘c*ck’ originated in political spaces during 2015, as white nationalists and the far-right began calling Republicans they deemed too moderate ‘c*ckservatives,’” Mediate explained.

“Am I a bigot? I guess damn so!” Nate confessed.

The office of Senator Tom Cotton either failed at vetting the staffer or condones his bigotry as the intern, “repeatedly said ‘f*g’ and ‘f*ggot’ and used ‘gay’ as a derogatory term on his public Twitter page before being hired. These Twitter rants also include the use of the slur ‘tranny.’”

“Americans are the superior race to everyone in the world … we’re superior people,” the intern claimed, while referring to the British “f*ggots.”

“Ryan has been deemed a ‘c*ck’ from white nationalist leader Richard Spencer, neo-Nazi websites The Daily Stormer and Stormfront and alt-right pundit Mike Cernovich,” Mediate listed. “Ryan even received the title “C*ck of The Year For 2016” by the Reddit page President Trump used to host an online town hall event.”

Dan Sullivan #fundie rawstory.com

An Arkansas lawmaker who owns a day care where a child died in a hot van previously fought a proposal that might have saved the boy’s life.

State Rep. Dan Sullivan (R-Jonesboro) is the chief executive officer of Ascent, a child care organization where 5-year-old Christopher Gardner died last week after spending eight hours strapped in a booster seat as the heat index soared over 100 degrees, reported KATV-TV.

Four employees of the West Memphis facility have been charged with manslaughter in the boy’s death.

“Staff did not follow company policies and procedures, and if they had, this tragedy would not have occurred,” Sullivan said in a statement.

He later offered to pay the boy’s funeral expenses, but the family declined.

“It didn’t take them but two minutes or one minute to go back and get off they lazy ass and go see where the kids at — they didn’t check for my grandbaby?” said the boy’s grandmother, Carrie Smith.

Sullivan asked the Arkansas Early Childhood Commission last year to reduce a requirement that at least half of child care employees at any facility be certified in CPR and first aid.

Four of the commissioners told KATV that Sullivan questioned whether the oversight body should exist after they refused to cut the requirement, and he sponsored a bill stripping the commission of its authority to regulate child care centers.

That measure became law, the only bill sponsored by Sullivan to pass during that legislative session.

Sullivan drew national attention in 2001, when he suspended an 8-year-old boy from school for three days for pointing a chicken finger at a teacher and saying, “Pow, pow, pow.”

The former principal justified the suspension under a zero-tolerance policy enacted at South School after two teens killed four classmates and a teacher and wounding 10 other students in 1998 at Jonesboro’s Westside Middle School.

The same Ascent facility where the boy died last week experienced a shigella outbreak in April, sickening nearly 40 children and employees, and the facility was temporarily closed Wednesday to stop the continued spread of the bacterial infection, reported Arkansas Times.

The Department of Human Services has also launched an investigation into Ascent for possible Medicaid fraud after the boy’s death.

A spokeswoman for DHS told the Arkansas Times that the boy had been inaccurately marked as present in class, which would have made the day care center eligible for reimbursement, raising concerns about the facility’s Medicaid procedures.

Donna Kikkert #fundie rawstory.com

A conservative student filed a lawsuit to turn her failing grade into an “A” because she did not like her professor’s assigned readings.

Donna Kikkert complained that her professor assigned texts that focused on LGBT poets instead of classics such as Robert Frost and Edgar Allan Poe, and she was unable to persuade University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point faculty to let her read what she wanted, reported the (Milwaukee) Journal Sentinel.

The 59-year-old Kikkert claims that Patricia Dyjak, her professor for Advanced Creative Writing Poetry, failed her in retaliation for complaining about course work involving “lesbians, illicit sexual relationships, incest and frequent swearing.”

She also accused the professor of exposing her bare breast while showing students a tattoo on her shoulder blade area.

“She has swung the pendulum far to the side of LGBT students and, in doing so, has chosen to totally discount the importance and the validity of the mainstream student population,” Kikkert argued in her suit.

Kikkert wants a court to force Dyjak to turn the F into an A, and she also wants the professor suspended for a year without pay or fired.

The professor is being represented by the state Attorney General’s Office because the university is a function of the state.

Dyjak declined to comment, but Assistant Attorney General Katherine Spitz has requested the case be dismissed because Kikkert’s allegations don’t amount to a violation of any law.

“Kikkert’s complaint fails because it does not provide any legal authority or other basis (and the defendant’s counsel is aware of none) upon which this court could require Dyjak to teach the work of certain poets in a college course … or to provide any particular student with the grade that student believes she deserves, rather than the one she earned,” Spitz argued in a court filing.

A Portage County judge dismissed the case, but Kikkert has said she may appeal.

Unidentified Racist #racist rawstory.com

A white woman in Toronto Canada verbally attacked Asian grocery store employees Friday in a video captured and posted on Facebook, the Huffington Post reports.

“Go back to China. This is Canada, English-first country,” the woman shouted, according to the video. “If you’re gonna work here, it is the law to know English.”

“It is a law to know English, and you know that,” she continued. As in the United States, there is no law that requires Canadian residents know English.

“It is the law in Canada that if you’re going to work here you need to know the English language,” she repeated.

Frank Hong, the teenager who filmed the video, told the Daily Mail onlookers were horrified by the woman’s outburst.

“After three minutes of constant, racist verbal abuse and after trying to intervene, I started to film this video,” Hong wrote in a Facebook post. “Racism and xenophobia isn’t far from us nor has it gone away. As Canadians we think we are safe from these disgusting attitudes and behaviours but we aren’t. It has only gotten worse recently. It seems like some people want to reinstate the Chinese Exclusion Act.”

“No employee who works so hard for so little money deserves this and no human being in the world deserves this,” Hong told the Daily Mail.

Clay Higgins #racist rawstory.com

A Louisiana Republican called for a religious war against Islamic terrorists in the wake of attacks over the weekend in London.

Freshman Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) called for violent action against suspected terrorists in a Facebook post, alongside a photo of police taking a suspect into custody after an attack Saturday at London Bridge killed seven people and injured nearly 50 others.

“The free world… all of Christendom… is at war with Islamic horror,” Higgins wrote.

“Not one penny of American treasure should be granted to any nation who harbors these heathen animals,” the lawmaker continued. “Not a single radicalized Islamic suspect should be granted any measure of quarter. Their intended entry to the American homeland should be summarily denied.”

“Every conceivable measure should be engaged to hunt them down,” he added. “Hunt them, identity them, and kill them. Kill them all. For the sake of all that is good and righteous. Kill them all.”

Higgins is a former police captain in Louisiana before his election to Congress in November.

"David" #sexist rawstory.com

A Canadian airline pilot said that she was shocked after receiving a recent note that cited the Bible as a reason flying airplanes were “no place for a woman.”

WestJet pilot Carey Steacy told CTV that crews were cleaning the aircraft after a flight from Calgary to Victoria on Sunday, and they found the note from a passenger named “David” written on a napkin.

“The cockpit of an airliner is no place for a woman,” the note said. “A woman being a mother is the most honour, not as ‘captain.’”

“PS I wish Westjet [sic] could tell me a fair lady is at the helm so I can book another flight,” he continued, observing that his views were “not PC.”

“It made me feel sad. It was just surprising,” Steacy recalled. “I can’t believe that there’s people that still think that way.”

In a post on Facebook, Steacy wrote that the passenger had been “welcome to deplane when you heard I was a ‘fair lady.’ You have that right. Funny, we all, us humans, have the same rights in this great free country of ours. ”

The WestJet passenger’s note also pointed to a Bible verse, Proverbs 31, which many Christians believe defines the “perfect” woman as a wife who works in the home.

Matt Rinaldi #racist rawstory.com

A fight broke out among lawmakers at the Texas State Capitol on Monday after a Republican representative responded to people protesting recently passed immigration legislation by calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement to come round them up.

Several local reporters on the scene in Austin bring word that shoving broke out among lawmakers on Monday afternoon after Texas Republican Rep. Matt Rinaldi told a group of Latino lawmakers that he called ICE on the protesters, who were on hand to protest the passage of SB4, an anti-sanctuary cities bill that will go into effect in September.
