In my youth - my early teens, no less - when I finally saw the light; of Reason, and concluded that a 'God' didn't exist, I looked up and issued this challenge:

'If you exist, God - smite me with all your anger now.'

@G. Fiiendish: Charles Darwin is probably best described as agnostic, but he was certainly closer to atheism than theism by the time of his death. He tried but found it impossible to reconcile Abrahamic notions of god with the world he observed.

@Palifox: I don't know who you're thinking of, but it's probably not Voltaire, who was a renowned critic of the Catholic Church and was imprisoned for his criticism of it several times. Like other luminaries of the Enlightenment, he was a deist. Try again.

@anonymous: Darwin was raised Christian and considered the priesthood, but by the time of his death was certainly not Christian. See above.

@Everyone on the Voltaire/printing press thing: Read this. He's not saying Voltaire invented the printing press, but rather that one he owned is now used for printing bibles. The story isn't true, is based on a misinterpretation of an old text, and is possibly reinforced by fundies' confusion of Voltaire with Diderot. Considering we've had fundies on here confusing Margaret Sanger with Margaret Thatcher and similar, I suppose that's not too bad a mix-up.
