I called the United States Internal Revenue Service [IRS] a few months ago and a Mexican woman answered the phone, speaking complete Spanish. I couldn't understand a word she was saying and only after saying 3-times, “Lady, I speak English,” did she stop talking Spanish. Truly, America has gone to hell when the IRS employs illegal immigrants to answer the phone. This is how OUR government treats American CITIZENS nowadays. Shame on them!

So while faffing about essentially in a disgraced exile on the island of Guam for a crime you try to pass off responsibility for to the whole of civilization which you relentlessly insult and decry you decided to go bug the IRS for unspecified reasons. Reasons which may or may not include you being suspected of being a tax cheat in addition to your other moral failings and being forced to defend yourself.

Then when the person who answers the phone speaks to you in what you identify as Spanish you angrily tell her you speak English (most likely in your trademark style of breathless beration) rather than identifying yourself and your business with the IRS or more sensibly clarifying that you would prefer to continue with an English speaking operator.

And so because you can't handle a telephone call like an adult you then in pointless, impotent anger accuse a government agency - a particularly dreaded one at that - of hiring illegal immigrants and being rude to American citizens when you neither identified yourself as such or took into account that you are calling from Guam and not within the US and were likely transferred automatically based on the call's point of origin to a representative who is trained to deal with Guam's natives (which it was assumed you would be) in their own language and not pissy little felons in exile that quite unrealistically expect everybody to already know how important they think they are and thus cater to their preferences without prompt regardless of the situation.

Oh and maybe it's because I'm from an officially bilingual country where manners are generally encouraged but in those cases where I am unexpectedly on the phone with someone speaking a language I am not fluent in I typically wait a few seconds for them to finish for two reasons. One: A business or government agency that deals with various languages on a daily basis will often have their reps read a standard greeting in a series of common languages before asking their caller's preference. Two: It's just polite. Which you were not. But of course it's the person you were rude to and then went on to deliberately offend countless others of loosely related ethnicity that are the ones you want to be held liable for rudeness.

D.J. Stupid; If Canadians can accept French with no trouble then Americans can accept Spanish.

Spanish, like French, Italian & Portuguese, is one of those yummy Romance languages...."romance" in more ways than one!

Then again, you hate sensual-anything.

It would do good for an American to learn different languages. Besides, immigrants DO learn English and "assimilate" after a generation or so.

Take a time machine to an Italian neighborhood in New York City, U.S.A. during the old "Gilded Age" long ago, EVERYBODY'S SPEAKING & "ACTING" ITALIAN!

But after a generation or so, they're me....and I don't even know Italian apart from a few phrases. Same with my Mom!

And there's nothing wrong with keeping some influence from the "old country"! You can still integrate and be "All-American" and have elements from the "old country"! Plenty of Italians are still devout Catholics and have stuff like "St. Joseph Tables" on St. Joseph's Feast Day. Grandma wasn't a practicing Catholic for years but she did go to St. Joseph tables every so often.

What is "Being American", anyway in regards to ethnic stuff? Do you want us to wear buckskin & beads....or loincloths....seal skin parkas? Perhaps weave textiles and rugs with bright geometric patterns? Maybe we should hang dream-catchers over our beds or eat frybread & pemmican. How about a great game of LaCrosse? Do you know any languages like Na-Dene, Algic, Uto-Aztecan, Muskogean or Iroquoian? Do you call Deity by names like Wakan-Tanka or Aakuluujjusi?

If anything, the Mexicans are more "American" than us! Most are part-indigenous and they've borrowed and integrated Native Culture in their culture and Christianity.
