So I can already see the secular thought police going from house to house, confiscating bibles and other dangerous literature, lighting bonfires on the streets, etc. What the Nazis did just a century ago will undoubtedly be repeated if some of the more militant atheists have their way.

Yeah, those damn militant atheists - bombing abortion clinics and trying to force their religious beliefs on the public schools.
BTW, the Nazis never confisticated bibles. Why would they? There's nothing in the bible that opposes fascism and much, in fact, that supports it.
It didn't happen even in Albania in the 50, where people were actually in prison for being theists. So, please, stop saying nonsenses. By the way, a century ago was 1907, and Hitler was only 16 years old. With that knowledge I doubt very much that you've done a deep research on that. Moreover, what you're describing, to be anything at all, was done once by a religious right wing dictatorship. Why do you asume that people who are not religious would not do that without using as a model people from your side who have really done that?, hypocritic much?
I can see the President adressing the nation now:
"A national state of emergency is hereby called into effect due to the dangerous prevalence of religion. The nation is hereby called to be purged of all religiosity.
The GOD Delusion is the new national constitution. All religious observance is to be eliminated, with The Church Of Satan given special privelledges to practice magick and enfore the new law.
The new criminal code is to be based upon the Singer-ite Utilitarian Code. Dissent is defined as any outward display of religiosity, and offenders shall be forcefully reeducated. All religious opinion is reclassified as severe mental illness, with sufferers to be detained in maximum security hospitals.
Religious Practice - including worship, private prayer, evangelisation, the indoctrination of minors - is reclassified as treason, and punished by death. "
I'd vote for him!
Actually, the Nazis published and distributed Bibles, they didn't burn them. They burned Torahs and Talmuds and Korans and the like, but they were actually pretty damn pro-Bible.
But not in 1907. The Nazis weren't doing much in 1907, seeing as how they didn't exist.
So some tiny group of atheists is going to go around confiscating Bibles from the 80% or so who are Christians?
The Nazi book burnings were carried out by Christians, who burned books by Jewish authors or books they considered "degenerate". In America, the best known book burnings were carried out by the anti-communist fanatic, Joseph McCarthy, and by various churches burning Harry Potter books and comic books. Theodore Dreiser's books were burned by a library in Indiana because they were "obscene and leftist". Book burning has always been a favorite of the extreme right. Good church-goers are more likely to burn books than would atheists.
"So I can already see the fundie thought police going from house to house, confiscating Harry Potter books and other 'dangerous' literature, lighting bonfires on the streets, etc. What the Nazis did just a century ago will undoubtedly be repeated if some of the more militant fundies have their way."
Fixed
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
- US Constitution, Bill of Rights
I'd like to see the more militant atheists (i.e. the vast minority) get around that amendment without being taken out by everyone else, secular or otherwise.
I really hope that militant atheists don't try to take the bibles away from this apathetic Spinozan pantheist. If they do, I'll be among the first to stand up to them. Somehow, I don't see that happening, as even the most militant I know could really care less what's in your book collection.
Confiscating "dangerous literature" - Hobby of fundies (though so far they only manage to do it in libraries)...
Burning books - While I think HP is crap, YOU are the guys burning them, last time I checked.
Also, the Nazis were active from between WWI and the end of WWII. 1907 does not fall into that perior, in case you slept through your history lessons.
Don't read much history, do you Bill? The Nazis burned a lot of books Bill, philosophy, science, and history books, Bill. They burned Talmuds and Korans, and books on Buddhist and Taoist philosophy, Bill. BUT they didn't burn Bibles, Bill, cause they claimed to be Christians, Bill. When are you going to stop lying about shit that you don't know. Bill?
Lessee... got a Bible, two Qurans, a Book of Mormon, and a copy of Science and Health. I don't believe a word of any of it and these imaginary "secular thought police" can still have them only when they pry them from my cold dead hands.
Oh, wait. Not gonna happen anyway.
I must say, though, that I can imagine this situation; a despotic atheist theocracy would do just that to help maintain a power base. And I know that plenty of people (many of whom read this site, I'd bet)would line up for Secret Police applications in such an instance
So I can already see the fundie thought police going from house to house, confiscating atheist books and other dangerous literature, lighting bonfires on the streets, etc. What the Nazis did just 70 years ago will undoubtedly be repeated if some of the more militant fundies have their way.
Book burning is a fundie sport:
"Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them before all men and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed." Acts 19:19-20
The thought police that will tell you "Think for yourself, do not trust any 'God-given' authority"?
Bibles are not dangerous; if read correctly they are the best tool an atheist could ask for. I have two Bibles, a Koran, a Poetic Edda and a story about the Aesir Yggdrasil. Oh, and I have the Iliad and the Odyssey somewhere too. I probably have a book about the Hindu gods and one about Buddhism as well. I'm still an atheist, though...
The Nazis were active about 70 years ago, not a century ago. Did you burn all your history books as well, or what?
The Nazis burned Bibles? Why would Christians burn Bibles?
...uh, who the fuck is confiscating Bibles and burning them, anyways?
Confused?
