I'd like to see this 'historian' travel here to the UK, and say that to the face of Richard Dawkins, with his solicitor & the press present. Bring money. Lots of money. Because our Libel, Slander, and Perjury* laws are so hyper-brutal and ultra-savage, they can make the eternal torments of Hell seem like a walk in the park.
All said solicitor would have to say in such a case, is that dictators such as Stalin, Pol Pot, and Kim Il-sung/Jong-il etc had Cults of Personality that are religions in themselves, and Atheists don't glorify or worship any other person.
The former World Wrestling Federation had to concede to the World Wildlife Fund about use of 'WWF' - at the High Court here in the UK - so by said 'historian' being counter-sued into oblivion (to the extent of him being lucky to be able to walk out of that court owning just the clothes on his back), you by association would have no choice but to STFU and admit you were wrong about using said 'historian's words as the basis of your own 'argument' about Atheism being a cult.
Because youur own legal right to say so would be murdered by the very not-Communist Rule of Law that applies in your country too, as the WWE will tell you.
And in the very not-Communist Dictatorship of Rule of Law in Democratic countries, such as yours (USA) and mine (UK), there are certain forms of 'speech' that aren't free; least of all baseless - and serious - allegations. And no amount of recourse to the 1st Amendment will help you, not even outside your country. That 'historian' - and therefore you - have no right whatsoever to even think about making such allegations. Care to prove us wrong otherwise...? >:D
