[Regarding putting only Christian symbols up in public space, responding to, "So it's not oppression when my religious symbols are left out of the public arena, but it is oppression when your religious symbols are left out? HYPOCRITE.]
No. It is called picking the biggest and going with it. There is no way possible to put up every single symbol of the world in one spot. It's like on the 4th of July, suing that the Mexican, English, French, etc. independance isn't getting equal time during that holiday. It's not oppression, it is going along with what the particular holiday was originally desinged to be that so many celebrate. It is just bad timing to put such a little holiday right next to the biggest holiday of the year.

No, I'm pretty sure that's oppression.
And what's with the 4th of July bit? Who has ever suggested celebrating Mexican, English, French, Swahili, whatever independence on the 4th? Bit of a non sequiter.
Saturnalia, the Mithraist celebration of the birth of god and numerous pagan celebrations predate Christmas. If you're going with what the holiday was originally designed to be, you'll leave Baby Jesus out entirely.
"No. It is called picking the biggest and going with it."
That would be unfair. One must allow all equally or none at all.
"There is no way possible to put up every single symbol of the world in one spot."
Therefore, to be fair, we should opt for no religious symbols on public property.
"It's like on the 4th of July, suing that the Mexican, English, French, etc. independance isn't getting equal time during that holiday."
Don't be such an obtuse asshat. In Mexico, in England, in France the citizens have their nationalist holidays. In the U.S. the 4th of July is our most prominent national holiday.
"It's not oppression, it is going along with what the particular holiday was originally desinged to be that so many celebrate."
I'd respond to that, but I can't understand your poorly written sentence.
"It is just bad timing to put such a little holiday right next to the biggest holiday of the year."
Yeah, Xmas shouldn't be allowed to intrude on the New Year's season. Around my house Xmas is such a little holiday. I guess it was just bad timing.
Those silly heathens, how dare they not have the forknowledge about how we would all celebrate Christmas thousands of years in the future. It really must be all there fault, not your own ego-centric stupidity.
Hey Brian,
You can celebrate your Independence Day on the 4th of July in the USA and I can celebrate my Canada Day on the first in Canada. And at the UN, we'll celebrate none or all.
You can celebrate your Christmas in your Christian homes and your Christian churches and the rest of us will celebrate whatever else we wish in our places. And in public places, we'll celebrate none or all.
No oppression!
Of course, but if they do the same in an Arab muslim country they don´t go to church, we have to mourn. Moreover, only 4% of the adults are regular church-goers. Now, whose the biggest one who decides?
Wayall, shame on them Jews fur puttin' Hanukkah raht na-yext to Christmas !
'N them Wickins and Payguns too, fur putting the Solstice and Yool raht at Christmastime !
Ain't fittin', ain't fittin' -- it just ain't fittin'...
@Brian
There is no way possible to put up every single symbol of the world in one spot.
In that case, let's not put any religious symbols up on public property. Private property, on the other hand, go for it.
Wonder what tune this guy will sing when Islam, a quickly growing religion, overtakes and becomes bigger than Christianity, a slowly declining religion. Will we just go with the bigger one and run with it?
Yeah, Hanaka isn't really that big, Passover is more important. But considering that Jeudaism predates Christianity and Christmas, what you're saying is like saying "Why did the Mayans build their ruins so close to the road."
Christmas already gets a good month, month and a half of coverage, how exactly, is that oppressive to you?
As was mentioned, Saturnalia came first, you're gonna have to wait your turn I guess.
And you DO know that jesus, if he existed, was NOT born in December, correct?
Brian, you cunt, stop trying to equate national holidays and religious holidays! Here, I'll try to make it simple:
A country => one history => one list of national celebrations related to the history of the country
A country with freedom of religion => several religions => one list of religious celebrations for each religion
There is no way possible to put up every single symbol of the world in one spot.
Duh, maybe that's why they just say leave them all out. No one stops people from putting Christmas symbols on their lawns or in front of churches, or even at the mall. You can't put them on public property for one simple reason: you don't own it!
Ooooh, it's ALN the troll!
Say, what will you do when the Muslims start demanding their religious symbols be put up at airports and other public places? Can't stop them - they're protected by that same First Amendment, eh? They're the fastest growing religion in the world, ya know.
Szenah didn't make the comment you originally quoted, Bobdole, so you can't hold him accountable for the opinions of others.
This post was centered around the idea that an American government should support Christianity's big holiday in a public space, while refusing to display symbols of other religious holidays occuring during this season, as well. The logic being, "Christmas is the biggest holiday, so the others don't need to be represented."
Using public space to promote one religion, while refusing (not just neglecting to offer, but outright refusing) other faiths the same right, violates the First Amendment. This guy's local government is doing something unconstitutional, and that's that. Anything beyond is personal beliefs, morality, and politics.
Say - do they have a Fourth of July in England?
[hyuck hyuck]

Personally I find it tiring that they encroach on MY Halloween with christmas. Criminy, around here there were red and green Teddy Bears in the stores by Columbus Day.
It's like on the 4th of July, suing that the Mexican, English, French, etc. independance isn't getting equal time during that holiday.
That must be one of the most idiotic statements I've ever seen. The 4th of July is for Americans and Americans only . French people do not have an "Independence Day", but they celebrate the start of the French Revolution on July 14th, when the La Bastille Jail was broken into by the revolutionaries. Mexicans celebrate their independence day on September 16 , not on Cinco de Mayo . And England doesn't have any.
Confused?
