Funny, since I spent some time back at my University's Program Against Domestic Violence, we often reported that 1 in every 4 women were raped during their years in college as an average in the US. That's ONE in FOUR are REPORTED... how many aren't?
I checked my friends and yup, we averaged 1 reported and 2 unreported for every 4 of us. (I fall under the no prosecution other than restraining orders - no criminal record of restraining orders, he can pass any job screening he wants.) As a rape victim who was not believed (our state laws at the time defined it as not a crime if the victim was male, and the rapist was female) I can say that the true horror is knowing that you have no power during that time. More specificlly, no power over yourself, or even over your own body.
Speaking as someone who was falsly accused of rape, I can say two other things. 1: having nobody believe you, not even your friends, is horrifying, not quite as bad as being the victim, but nothing to sneeze at. 2: Every person who makes a false rape accusation that is found out, hurts all real rape victms trying to seek restitution and solace.
