[Regarding Charleston’s first ever gay pride parade, in which Mayor Keith Summey has agreed to appear as Grand Marshall]
I moved to the south because I loved the independent spirit and Christian values here. However, like most places, the hedonism of the northern communities is finding its way into the Bible belt. Like Sodom and Gomorrah, our Holy City is fast becoming a cesspool of gambling, drugs and now deviant sexual behavior sponsored by its political leadership. Business as usual in Washington DC has now taken root in our fair city. Shame on you Mayor Summey, for becoming just another pandering politician, I thought you were different.

Reading the rest of his editorial:
"The Mayor has a choice. What if NAMBLA (look it up), wanted to hold a rally on the steps of North Charleston High School? Should the citizens of North Charleston tolerate it? How about the American Nazi Party? What if they wanted to celebrate Adolf Hitler's birthday in Park Circle, should the people of North Charleston be accommodating because they have the right to express themselves too?"
YES. I don't like them any more than you do, but First Amendment that protects their freedom of speech is the same one protecting yours and mine. Being able to cart people off to jail for promoting something you find abhorrent may be tempting, but it opens to door to fascism. What happens if something you agree with becomes viewed as "deviant" and you get tossed in jail because you're in favor of it? Why can't conservatives grasp the concept of "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it?"
So, if one is not a bigot, that means one is not thinking independently?
And NAMBLA people are child molesters. Gays are consenting adults. Big difference.
Actually, the South is known for being, IN THEORY, Christian and doing every possible anti Christian stuff. Yes, appearances.
I've been to Charleston. Had a fine meal at Hyman's. Never once did it strike me as a "holy" city.
And, as far as Washington D.C. is concerned, are you implying that the current administration is responsible, and that the Bush years were the bastion of integrity?
Holy city? You're telling me that Charleston never had anything like homosexuality, gambling, or drug use before the evil gays came from the North?
Here's a tip: There wouldn't be a gay pride parade in your city without a fairly sizeable gay population. You might want to think about that.
Charleston a holy city? You obviously have never been there during the height of tourist season.
And as an original native of SC I do have to say this article nearly made me cry... Finally! Proof that there are people in SC who aren't bigoted, fundie-Christians that hate the world!

Mayhaps that's why the Bible Belt regularly gets hit by tornadoes etc. It's your God's punishment for your bigoted attitudes against his children - especially his gay ones.
'Sodom & Gomorrah', John? Care to explain why, in all the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the only place left untouched was the 'Sodom & Gomorrah' that is the French Quarter of New Orleans?
Oh Yeah. This sure looks like a Holy City to me:

A veritable fountainhead of Christian Virtue, indeed!
I moved to the south because I loved the independent spirit and Christian values here.
No, you moved there expecting to find that everybody agreed with your hate-filled, judgmental, holier-than-thou bigotry. Now you're pissed to find out that you actually are a minority.
I moved to the south because I loved the independent spirit But I hate that not everyone thinks like I do.
Is this along the lines of "I love his boyish charm, but I hate his immaturity"?
Charleston's nickname is the "Holy City" because of the high number of churches per capita.
The parade is actually in North Charleston, which (despite the name) is actually a separate city all together.
Also, I've lived here for 13 years and I don't think that I've ever heard of the Examiner.
Yeah, shame on you for participating in a harmless cultural celebration by a significant portion of your constituency!
Next you'll attend some swarthy foreigners' nationalist march, like Columbus Day.
Business as usual in Washington DC... Do you even know what that means? Does it even mean anything?
Oh, right, and Washington is a technically a Southern City. Not Deep South like SC, but still certainly South.
"independent spirit and Christian values here"
"independent spirit"
=Individual drive and values
"Christian values"
=Strict doctrine and adherance to same
You got some 'splaining to do
Confused?
