In 1963 Aldrin earned a Doctor of Science degree in Astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His graduate thesis was "Line-of-sight guidance techniques for manned orbital rendezvous", the dedication of which read, "In the hopes that this work may in some way contribute to their exploration of space, this is dedicated to the crew members of this country’s present and future manned space programs. If only I could join them in their exciting endeavors!"'
You don't earn a BSc - least of all a Ph.D - by being a herp-a-derp-derp retard, you know. The latter stood him in good stead when he qualified to become a NASA astronaut; only the best become their elite explorers. It was his intelligence - via his doctoral thesis - that, via it's implementation during the Gemini missions (with the Agena module, ultimately to the use of the Command/Service Module & LEM in the Apollo missions) that ensured that he did join them in their exciting endeavours; he being the second man on the Moon in the process. PROTIP: In subsequent Apollo missions - including the later landing by fellow astronauts David R. Scott & James B. Irwin - he has never doubted the veracity of the findings of the Lunar soil & rock samples brought back; including the 'Genesis Rock' brought via the Apollo 15 mission. In that case, it was proved to be 4.5 billion years old: the same age as the Earth.
