I hate all institutional education because it sets up an authority that can never be questioned. To question the authoritative voice is like blasphemy.

One example is environmentalism. Not everyone agrees with the science in gobal warming etc.. yet why does a basic science class have questions about your carbon footprint? It's more a political issue than a scientific one. Let's learn physics, biology, chemistry basics without talking about acid raid, recycling, or methane producing livestock... Science class becomes politics 101.

Or for one thing, why do even MATH books contain such loaded type questions? If I have 2 cans and I recycle one, how many end up in the landfill? That kind of teaching is really annoying.

I don't see this as fundie at all. I have issues with 'environmentalism' myself. I don't give a toss about my carbon footprint, because carbon offset is a global racket which deprives us of our money without doing a thing to change the amount of carbon that is belched into the atmosphere: people are getting rich, and the pollution continues.

Global warming? An arguable proposition, which should be argued in science class, not propounded.

Acid raid? I don't know what that is.

Recycling? In our borough, Camden, and in many others in London, we all separate out our rubbish.Then it is all dumped in the same truck, and crushed together. Then it is shipped to China, or India, or Indonesia, and allegedly reseparated. But that would be impossible, so it goes to landfill, and in a country far, far away, so who in the council cares, so long as it's cheap?

Methane-producing livestock? I know humans who produce as much methane as lambs (you know who you are!): it depends on the diet. And livestock make valuable use of otherwise unproductive land, which is surely a good thing?

But are these things really in school textbooks? I'd like to see some evidence of that.

All in all this post makes some sense: these are political issues.

redfergus: Acid rain occurs when coal-burning power plants use coal with a high sulfur content, creating sulfur dioxide as a byproduct. The sulfur dioxide mixes with moisture in the air, creating sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid then falls to the ground with normal rainful, raising the pH balance of the ground to the point where plants DIE. Thousands of pines, firs, and sugar maples were killed, as these trees are particularly sensitive to changes in pH.

Acid rain in the United States, anyway, was reduced by adding scrubbers to coal-burning power plants which greatly reduced or even removed the sulfur dioxide from the exhaust created by burning high sulfur-content coal.

I learned all this back in the '70's as part of my science classes, and you could have googled it or even just checked Wikipedia. Evidently, that's too much effort.

I'm a to-be-biologist, and I can tell this guy is a jerk. I have studied some environmental ecology, and I know that it has nothing to do with politics. Humans are very dangerous to the environment and can cause huge damage to it's ecosystems and species. This is a fact as it's supported by evidence. Ecology doesn't adress the question whether it's right or wrong for us to do so, it only studies what is true. Philosophy is used to ponder this, and politics are used to put an end to these problems.

redfergus, what you just wrote was roughly about as stupid as what the fundie wrote here. You clearly have no understanding of what you were adressing.

Nope, that's more the police departments' purview than the educational departments'.

Any more, it's getting so when a cop thinks "frog" at you, you'd better jump, or he's going to Tase you. And you'd better know when the cop is thinking "frog" at you, because it seems like they don't even need to warn you of their intentions first nowadays.

(I despise Tasers, by the by. I think that cops are using them instead of negotiations and speech, and the accounts of their use leading to the victim's death are mounting rapidly.)

Yeah, but to question your beliefs IS blasphemy, it's not just LIKE blasphemy, it is. "Making it worse? How can it be worse?"

Who said authorities can never be questioned? Only a poor leader can't take being questioned. If your authority lies on well founded grounds it grows with qestioning, as this makes it even stronger.

Methane sound like chemistry, acid raid as well, recycling is home economics, not politics. If you recycle glass and aluminium containers then the next batch will be less expensive to make. Plus, it won't clutter the landfill - it's a win-win situation. You do agree that a landfill is not a pretty sight, don't you? You would not want to live next door to one?

What's loaded with that math question? It's basic facts. If you buy two bananas, eat one and forget about the other, how many banans have you gotten full value of?

The reason why sorted garbage gets unsorted could be that lots of people don't sort it, so it is allready mixed in the containers. And the person mixing it, in Berlin or wherever it was, he could simply be doing it wrong. When more and more sort the garbage more and more will end up staying sorted the whole way. Ask for things made of recycled paper or plastic, then more will make stuff that way. You can't wait for others to fix things, you must be an active part of it.
