[F2M transgender person gains permission to use the men's bathroom]
Terry, the problem is that a male pervert can claim to be a female and spend hours in the women's room. Many teen boys will now ask to shower in the high school girl's gym because they identify with the female gender that day? Would you want that to happen to your sister if you have one? How about a niece? Did you read this part of the article?
"Last month a Washington state college decided it would not prevent a 45-year-old man who presents himself as a transgender “female” from lounging naked in a women’s locker room, in an area frequented by girls as young as six. Teenage girls on a high school swim team were using the facilities in September when they saw ‘Colleen’ Francis exposing male genitalia through the glass window in a sauna."
Surely you have some concerns.

In places where people are permitted to use the restrooms for the gender they identify with, there have been no instances of abuse by the transgendered. However, there was a transgender person in Baltimore who was badly beaten at a fast food restaurant just for being transgender. So tell me, who's really at risk?
i happen to have a transguy in my immediate family. i think i can speak for not only him but most transfolk when i say the vast majority of the time they walk into a public restroom, they just want to pee.
if somebody's pervy enough, and has low enough self-control, to do untoward things in ANY public restroom --- regardless of gender --- well, they can already do that, right now. and get arrested for the public indecency, too, right now.
the hoopla here is all about transfolk not wanting to get arrested merely for peeing while using the restroom appropriate to their presentation --- which, i must say, they can already do the vast majority of the time, since usually there's nobody else in there pervy enough to go do genital checks on random pissers. (do any of YOU really care what, precisely, the person in the stall next to you has for crotchal equipment, so long as they're not waving it in your face? i don't.)
You make it sound like this is happening all over the place. I'm betting that the instances are rare. But what's wrong with teaching girls that if some guy is acting creepy to stay away from him? If anyone of either gender is creeping in a restroom or locker room, they'll be kicked out. I don't know of anyone "lounging" for hours in a public restroom.
"a male pervert can claim to be a female and spend hours in the women's room"
So fundies think the way it works is that anyone can claim to be transgender and the authorities just have to take their word for it?
But then, the fundies already believe that an "anti-gay hate crime" is ANY criminal act perpetrated against a gay person; even if the perp didn't know, or couldn't care less, that the vic is gay.
If I were going to perv out in a public restroom (even though the probability of me doing that at all is zero), I'd be doing it in the gentlemen's room. So, do you think that I, a man, should use the ladies' room instead?

That is entirely wrong... all too many places in the world insist that you present completely as the gender you are transitioning to for months (or years in some cases) before you have the operation(s)... and that includes using the correct gendered bathroom.
In short, plenty of pre-transition people use the "new" genders bathroom...

TBH, I hope that one day we'll have unisex showers and locker rooms. I can tell you from personal experience, it's not that bad if the teens involved are equiped to handle it - or close enough not to care.
"Surely you have some concerns."
Nope. If children aren't taught that nudity is shoking they really won't think it's shocking. Although that necessitates a society that is open about such things. For example, it works wonderfully for millions of nudists.
6-years olds in a college locker room?
Anyone 'lounging' naked in any locker room?
Both highly unlikely.
Anyone naked in a sauna? Against the rules in any sauna I've ever seen. Your butt must not touch the seat.
"Surely you have some concerns."
i don't know, i do think you're kind of hung up on some silly things, but then again if you died right now i'd never even know, so it's a Bad Idea to call that concern.
What "pervert" has ever done this just to get into a restroom? Teen boys are not clamoring to say they are actually a woman just to peep at ladies in the shower. Trans persons are routinely harassed or beaten for using the bathroom or locker room that correlates to their gender identity. So who should really be concerned, here?
And that account is obviously written by someone with a bigoted point of view. It's skewed slop that's being dished out to all the other small minded bigots. Try reading actual news stories about trans people being murdered, abused, threatened, and battered by the people who have "some concerns."
Transgenderism isn't something that comes and goes, stupid. It's a loooong process. If your male pervert and your teen boys are so eager that they are willing to spend hours with psychologists and doctors, and change their legal gender with the government, to be able to use women's bathrooms and showers, I'd say go ahead...
At my work-place we have men's and women's bathrooms, but the women's are closer to my department, so the men in my department use them as well. Who cares?
Btw, why do you switch from talking about men's bathrooms to women's? Is it only horrible if a man is in the women's shower, but a woman in the men's shower is no problem for your brother or nephew if you have one?
Would you rather have gay men in the men's shower or women's shower? What about lesbians; should they use the women's or men's shower?
Life is a series of compromises. Don't take it too seriously; you'll never get out if it alive...
Same-sex marriage is just as bad an idea as opposite-sex marriage.

That does sound very...well...'Swedish' ;)
OK, let's suppose a born-male decides to spend hours in a male washroom. How long do you think that will work before someone calls the cops?
And the male teen who wants to shower in the women's shower? Can I see your perscription for antiandrogens & estrogen? Your permission slip signed by your parents and your doctor?
Argumentum ad absurdum anyone?
Terry, the problem is that a male pervert can claim to be a female and spend hours in the women's room [after extensive psychological testing and counseling, being confirmed as being in fact transgendered, and beginning the medically supervised transition to the gender other than the one he was born into].
FTFY.
re: Colleen Francis
"Joe Wheeler of the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office said he will not prosecute the matter as indecent exposure. Instead, the college set up curtains that the girls were instructed to change behind."
Seems like an appropriate resolution

Perhaps it is, I've never lived anywhere else.
The bathrooms in question are single "stall" rooms. In public toilets that have multiple stalls in a room, even Swedes stick to the specified gender. :)
Because high-school kids are going to go through the humiliation of faking being transgender so they can magically see through a stall and maybe watch a girl pee.
Right.
What do you think happens in women's bathrooms? Naked pillow fights?
That's not even taking into account what it takes to be legally considered transgender. One doesn't just say, "I'm a girl now!"
Even though I agree that this isn't really a problem, I think many comments here are quite misinformed. I have never heard of institutions have this policy, such as California public schools insisting on documentation, much less surgery. In the case of a school, they might consult child's parents, but that's about it.
Confused?
