According to the Sixth Article of the US Constitution, there's no problem with this. Further, Obama identifies himself as Christian so it's only you calling him a Muslim.

The emblem posted was only created after 1706 when the Act of Union made England and Scotland (and Ireland) one nation. They just combined the emblems of the two countries.

The English symbol has always been the three reclining lions (see the centre of the emblem), the Scottish symbol the Lion Rampant (the standing lion in the centre) and the Irish symbol the Shamrock or Harp (see centre again)

The Unicorn is also a symbol of Scotland, so they probably used that to avoid having two Lions. The Unicorn is chained to symbolise how dangerous it was considered as a mythical beast, as opposed to the Lion.

The French is the motto of the English (later British) monarchy, created when the official language of England was French - meaning 'My God and my Right'.

The latin in the centre means 'Evil to he who evil thinks'

I'd be more worried if they were doing something about it. I'm a lot less worried in the US about the ridiculous idea of the White House taken over by Muslim extremists than the entirely plausible possibility of the FBI and Secret Service being taken over by hysterical, mentally ill, lunatic-fringe, right-wing, Jesus-freak conspiracy theorists. After all, as RR proves, they've already taken over a good part of Kentucky and several other red~~neck~~ states.

AuraTwilight, 1776 was the US declaring nationhood. We'd been fighting England 'officially' since 1775. It was more us attacking them than the other way around.

That being said, seeing people compare the mood today to the factors that contributed to the US breaking away from England pisses me off to no end, too. Also the folks who profess that the situation in the US today is a lot like Germany after WWI make me want to put heads through walls.

Last time I checked, Obama was Christian. Apparently just because he sees no problems with Muslims as a whole (and not the crackpots who bomb buildings and subways), that makes him muslim, and by extension, evil?

Can someone tell me about someone being Muslim automatically affiliates them with Al Qaeda and the fringe elements of their faith? Because I know quite a few Muslim folks, and none of them are staunchly and violently anti-American.

Can't judge a group on their fringe elements. All Muslims aren't terrorists, all Christians aren't fundies, etc, etc

It's a definite trend over here to the US style fundieism and persecution complex, to the point that last night there was a program on BBC1 (for those unfamiliar with UK television this is the main channel of the national broadcaster, the one you have to pay money to every year for a license to have television receiving equipment) entitled "Are Christians persecuted?". It contained a disturbing number of arguments that would be familiar to regulars here, and even suggested that to base a society on reason alone would lead to a Stalinist totalitarianism. Rational thinkers over here would do well to keep a close eye on the situation and watch for the tricks used in the USA...

That's all a bit gloomy, but it did surprise me that such a thing would be on BBC1, rather than on BBC4 (or in the pages of the Daily Mail)

Absolutely nothing. There's no law or anything in the constitution which states that a Muslim can't be president. Even if it were true that Obama was an Al-Qaeda terrorist, as long as he hasn't been charged with any high crimes or misdemeanors then he remains as our duly elected president.

I don't expect a British person to understand our government, but usually you hear this same nonsense from right-wing Americans who also don't understand how our government works.

To all the Americans here: no, you don't have the monopoly on retards; however, whereas yours are ultra-intolerant, ours are ultra-tolerant and make up the vast majority of what's often referred to as "the P.C. brigade".

At least until your back is turned; then they're just as intolerant, except they don't endorse violence.

Nice example is the Archbishop of Canterbury. He campaigns for gay rights, but then declares that there will be no gay weddings in Anglican churches (granted, he has and should have the legal right to decide, as with all clergy of any religion, but it's still intolerant).

There was one vicar who banned his congregation from singing "Jerusalem", or some other sort of patriotic hymn (I think it was that one, I'm not sure, though) because it "put the country above God".

Well, screw your poxy God; country before religion, I say! Why? Because my country actually bloody exists!

Article VI: 'no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.'

Even Muslims born in the US have the right to run for - and be elected as - president of the USA.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is head of the Church of England, and Defender of the Faith. She's also a devout Christian herself. On said state visit to the UK, news reports stated that the Obamas - none more so than First Lady Michelle - got on like a house on fire with the Queen and Prince Philip (who, fortunately, didn't come out with any of his usual Tourettes-esque gaffes!). They found the Obamas to be extremely charming and erudite. Suck it, fundies.
