[In response to the question "Atheists: Why aren't mice considered our closer evolutionary ancestor than chimps? Since we share more DNA?"]
The authoritative answer is that it doesn't really matter "who" we're related to in the "evolutionary tree."
What simply matters is that those who choose to believe in evolution have temporarily escaped from God's Commandments, and in their own eyes, they are free to live as they choose.
This means that abortion, homosexual marriage, recreational sex, drug and alcohol abuse, and anything else they "choose" to do is OK, because they simply choose not to believe in the One who has commands against those things.
At the heart of atheism is selfishness: I WILL DO WHAT I WANT.

No, that would be what lies at the heart of theism -- one or more gods screaming "you will do what I tell you to do" and hurting you (and often those around you, involved or not) if you refuse or even try to comply but fail. By your definition it is selfish to decide for myself what food I'd like from the vending machine or what clothes to wear for the day.
At the heart of atheism (in so far as what little is shared broadly enough to qualify) is "either there are no gods or what gods there are fail to properly make themselves known, therefore do as you will and make your one life a worthwhile one" . Simply doing as you wish is not selfishness. Selfishness is making unreasonable demands, and doing as you wish at the expense , of others.
That's the authoritative answer? Care to point to the journal that's published in?

Wait, are you claiming that people naturally want to have abortions, be gay, do drugs, and abuse alcohol? That says more about you than it does about atheists.

Nonsense. One can believe in God, and even be opposed to abortion, homosexual marriage, recreational sex, drug and alcohol abuse without believing there was literally a talking snake or that the earth was created only 6,000 years ago. Most Christians gave up treating Genesis as a science book 1,600 years ago.
Meanwhile, Chri-stainity is I WILL DO WHAT MY DEITY WANTS, AND THAT IS BASICALLY WHAT I WANT ANYWAY, AND YOU MUST ALSO DO IT OR FACE ETERNAL TORTURE.
I suppose as I have no problem with the ToE, sex for purposes other than reproduction, recreational substance use (but not abuse), etc, I must not be a real Christian.
So was the preacher Ted Haggard DOING WHAT HE WANTED when he had homosexual sex and did meth with that guy?
At the heart of theism it appears is selfishness and doing what he wanted. Ted Haggard certainly did that. Anything he chose was certainly OK.
I'm sure you'll claim "he wasn't a true theist" like you fundies always do.
How did being a theist stop him from being selfish and DOING WHAT HE WANTED? What about for Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker? What about for Jimmy Swaggart? Anything they chose was certainly OK, too.
They all believed in "The One" yet were selfish and DID WHATEVER THEY WANTED.
“The authoritative answer is that it doesn't really matter "who" we're related to in the "evolutionary tree."”
But you’re not an authority.
“What simply matters is that those who choose to believe in evolution have temporarily escaped from God's Commandments, and in their own eyes, they are free to live as they choose.”
Hardly. I accepted evolution for a long time before I left the Church, and that was because of Christains, not scientists.

Where does your god command against abortion?
Or samesex marriage?
Or drug/alcohol abuse?
“At the heart of atheism is selfishness: I WILL DO WHAT I WANT.”
