In religion (at least, in Christianity) you can do all the nasty and malicious things you want short of murdering someone, and as long as you go tell a priest and say some nice words to a wall, you're completely off the hook. No guilt whatsoever, because your sins are always cleansed.it hurts other people .
The world that TalesoftheGoldMonkey describes sounds a lot like a world where religion is mandatory.
You know, TalesoftheGoldMonk is actually right. People who commit crimes never get arrested. They never get convicted or sent to prison or labor camps. They never get shunned by the community or prevented from finding work. The only bad thing that happens to them is whatever the Invisible Sky Father does t them.

I regularily DO imagine a world without religion.
Tell me why it is that the religious always admit to wanting to kill absolutely everything that moves any time anyone wonders what life would be like without religion? Are they all that mentally disturbed, or are they just repeating a mantra without realizing the actual content the message sends along?
Note the bit about killing himself on the end of that little spree. The law really isn't much protection against that sort of killer.really what he'd do if the fear of Gunderscored didn't keep him in check, he's got worse issues than mere sociopathy.
