this is fine, if by "a while back" you mean 1500.
I think it's worth pointing out that the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, assumes the Earth to be flat. Jesus thought the world was flat.

[Rant on]No. Just NO. I am so tired of pseudoscience and this referent BS! This is valid as a MATHEMATICAL tool, not a PHYSICAL one. Because physics adds a bunch of laws to which purely mathematical object are not subjected to. Like inertia or relativity.
