Personality Change because of the occult?
My sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia. We used to be very close. She is 7 years older than me. I always knew her to be loving and protective of me.
I went to visit her recently. This was the first time I had seen her since the diagnosis.
She wasn't like the woman I remembered her being. She didn't look pleased to see me at all. She stared right through me with complete disdain. For the first time in my life, she actually put me down.
I couldn't believe it. I know that right before this personality change happened, she was dabbling in the occult.
Does anyone know if dramatic, total personality change is part of what happens when people dabble in the occult and things go wrong?

You understand what schizoprenia is, don't you? Persons suffering from this disorder often experience changes in outward personality. Dabbling in the occult may have been part of her disorder's manifestion, but had nothing whatever to do with what you describe.
If you don't understand the nature of the illnes, read up on it, please. Your sister will appreciate your understanding.
My sister, who had always been a fumdamentalist all her life, also underwent a change. When my mother, who had been living with me since my father's death 20 years earlier, went back to visit her great-grandchildren, my evil fundy sister discovered that my mother had saved up $25,000.
So much for civility, so much for family values. The fumdy whore stole my mother blind, took away her cat and also looted my personal property.
The real hateful fundy personality showed through. I blame this evil bitch for my mother's death.
If hell exists, it is for self-worshipping, self-righteous fundies.
To be fair, I've seen things a lot worse, this simply seems like a misunderstanding of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia often causes direct changes in a person's personality, like what you're describing here. Her dabbling in the occult could even be a symptom of her disorder, but it's definately not the other way around, IE- the dabbling in the occult causing the personality shift. Meh.
"She wasn't like the woman I remembered her being."
Schizophrenia tends to do that you moron.
"She didn't look pleased to see me at all. She stared right through me with complete disdain. For the first time in my life, she actually put me down."
Tell her to take her meds. Then come back when she's feeling better.
"I couldn't believe it. I know that right before this personality change happened, she was dabbling in the occult."
Oh good god...
"Does anyone know if dramatic, total personality change is part of what happens when people dabble in the occult and things go wrong?"
Grow the fuck up.
She probably didn't look pleased to see you because she's been diagnosed with a serious mental illness and she knows your stupid ass is going to ignore the illness and try to convince her she is demon-possessed. Of course, you'll never back down because if schizophrenia were real, it would be in the bible, and if it's not in the bible, it's the devil's lies. Have fun losing your relationship with your sister.
Another story I think is missing something! I don't know much about mental diseases, and it's entirely possible it is behind the sudden change in attitude, but I doubt Vanished didn't try and biblethump the poor girl before this visit.
Personality change, schizophrenia, involved in "the occult".
Why you completely decide to ignore the relevance of number two in favor of the infinitely less significant number three, I will never understand. But it is an incredibly common occurrence with you people. Saddening...
She stared right through me with complete disdain.
I do the same thing to most fundamentalists.
Does anyone know if dramatic, total personality change is part of what happens...
Allow me to finish this one in a more appropriate manner, "...when people become fundamentalists and most of their higher order brain functions start to shut down."
One of the most profound effects of mental illness is the changes it causes in personality.
She's not possessed. She's ill. Preaching at her and trying to convince her she is afflicted with demons is only going to make her situation worse.
She's already hurting. Show her some understanding and rein in your compulsive desire to witness to her before you drive her over the edge and she harms herself or someone else. Pray for her if you think it helps, but keep it to yourself.
You know what I love about non-fundies? There are probably a fair share of people that post here that have, or still are, "Dabbling in the Occult" by Vanished's opinion... yet here no one is bent out of shape by it and are the first to mention it was probably a symptom of her disease... if a newly turned fundie suddenly was diagnosed, the first thing they'd say was "god was trying to save her" and cram all the religion they can get down her throat demanding she stay with her new religion.
Please do your sister a huge favor and don't visit her again until you fully understand what schizophrenia is. Ask her doctor for advice on dealing with her. Make sure she's taking her medication.
In other words, act like her sister and not an ignorant, superstitious bible-thumper.
I dont know her, but I will go out on a limb and say that if she is dabling in the occult, then she has more than likely studied Wicca. Wicca empowers women and gives them a GODDESS to worship as well. Wiccans are also known to "never forget" what the Christians did to them in the past, so she has more than likely learned more about your bible than you have.
To be quite honest, if she is in the occult, the reason why she looked straight through you with complete disdain is because she was HOPING that you would keep your FUNDY MOUTH SHUT and not put her down for being non-christian.
Personality change does sometimes come with a paradigm shift like that. Try atheism, it is very enlightening.
This really, really depressing. I feel bad for the both of them. I've never had a loved one suffer from something like schizophrenia, but I know it can't be easy.
Though, that 'occult' comment irritates me.
Confused?
