Have you ever looked into christianity for real with an open mind, i doubt it. for example if you had an illness and you want it diagnosed and you went to see two specialist doctors...one said youll probably be fine just take it easy, and the other said you need treatment right away its serious. my guess is that in this case you would look into the case for treatment to completely check if you were ok or not. Think of the illness as christianity, therefore looking at the claims christianity makes, it would be pretty fatal to dismiss them all without really really checking it out for yourself and knowing you were right without being stubborn

There's three problems with this here statement:
1. If I were in that hypothetical situation, I'd probably seek out a third doctor and get another opinion.
2. I was born and raised Catholic, so I technically have 'checked out Christianity with an open mind'
3. Hypotheticals are no where near effective when they're devised by the clinically retarded.

Yes, but if that were the case, the 2nd 'doctor' would have a bone through his nose and a feather in his hair and probably should be ignored!
It raises a valid point however tat Christianity sucks in the 'hypochondriacs' - something which Scientology seized upon and really ran with.
Doctor: Im sorry, but it apperes that you have a rare case of cancer
Samuel: OMG! what is it?
Doctor: its called Christianity. The christianity cancer affects your heart, but it can also cause a sub-cancer called Fundamentalisim, that quickly spreads to the brain; specifically to the centers of Reasoning and thought control.
samuel: what will happen? can it be cured?
Doctor: unfortunatly...no, it cannot be cured.
The Christianity Cancer is one of the lead causes in rampant stupidity, Causes you to talk to yourself, creates respect and fear of imaginary characters named after the cancers themselves. and extreme close-mindedness with a drive to infect other people.
there is nothing that the modern world can do, you should consult with a 14th century doctor. And hope that he cuts out your brain.
Well, he has something that vaguely resembles a point. Dismissing it out of pure stubbornness would be silly.
On the other hand, there are more than enough reasons to dismiss Christianity out of hand without resorting to stubbornness. (And yes, I have looked into it - I was raised Catholic.)
He proceeds from a poor premise. In his argument there are only two doctors. The most logical thing to do in the scene he presents is to go see another doctor or two or three.
Also, in the case of Xianity, I can see the facts and make my own diagnosis. I'm not going to let others make my theological decisions for me.
NKF -- I, too, got a kick out the the Xianity as an illness line. I've thought that for years. Also, I found the phrase "pretty fatal" amusing.
In order for this analogy to be equivalent to the situation this guy wants it to be, we have to change the analogy a bit.
For example, if you were walking down the street, and there was a guy in a white lab coat with a stethescope made out of plastic, who swore that he was a doctor, and that you had a deadly disease that was causing you to bleed from every orifice.
Right next to him, there are a hundred other guys dressed identically, offering different diagnoses; some say you have a horrible stomachache, others claim you have a horrible headache. Some insist you have various broken bones.
Oddly, you don't feel the symptoms of any of the problems they describe, nor do you seem to have any of the obvious injuries they describe. Each insists that their bottle of genuine snake oil, and only their bottle, will cure your problem.
Hmmm. The analogy ends up being a little long when you make it accurate. Ah well.
Sammy, Sammy, Sammy...the phrase "Think of the illness as Christianity..." Well, you're not really that dumb are you?
Like that doctor I saw once. Walked into her office for a routine checkup, next thing I know she's telling me my leg is missing and I'm going to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
Naturally I went for a second opinion, got told the same thing. Well, who am I to argue with doctors? I'm just the patient.
If only the ones with motors weren't against my religion.
Either that, or we now have a new award that is started by this post, the "Think of the illness as Christianity" award - for those incredible posts where a fundie posts a phrase or sentence just like this, where they hit so close to the real truth without realizing it.
I would agree that Xianity is a disease, except that, unlike a disease, it can be "pretty fatal" to those who aren't infected with it.
We HAVE looked into it thoroughly. Mabye you haven't and that is why you gullibly believe? Have you checked out every other religion, by they way? It would be pretty fatal to dismiss them all without really really checking it out for yourself, and knowing you were right without being stubborn, right?
And yes, I do think of (obsessive) Christianity as an illness.
Would there be an award for "Best attempt at disguising Pascal's Wager"?
This isn't Pascal's wager - the guy is actually advocating attempting to find evidence as to which position is true, which makes playing the odds unnecessary (which is just as well because, as has been shown many times before, in a world of multiple possible religions Pascal's wager actually slightly favours the atheist). The argument is mostly sound, it's just that his apparent total faith in the truth of his claims leads him to discount the possibility that one still might reject his kooky religion even after considering the evidence.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
