Ice is less dense than water for a given volume because it expands as it solidifies. It is of course the only substance that does, and the only substance that needs to do so. What would happen to fish and other life in ponds and lakes if ice sunk as it solidified, thus causing them to freeze from the bottom up?
It's another example of an infinitely wise Creator/Designer planning for everything.

The fish would have evolved some mechanism to survive those different conditions (possibly as simple as living above the ice, moron), or they would have died out in regions where ice regularly forms and evolved only in warmer areas.

Most current lifeforms would die, however, life on earth evolved with water which expands upon freezing, so you have no point.

No, Dr. Dim, it's an example of life evolving to fit the existing conditions.
I'm not even sure that ice at the bottom of the ocean will have any affect on most marine life. It is already near freezing on the ocean floor, except where there are geological events, it's not like ice will change the temp that much. And unless the ice piles up, it won't really cool the warmer surface water where many fish live.
OR it could be the fact that ice has tiny air bubbles trapped in it and THATS what makes it float. do freeze solid in winter, and the fish and other life that lives in them survive, generally by burrowing into the bottom and hibernating.
A more worrying point is that the seas might've frozen solid if ice sank.
Beer freezes. The fact that it exists, however, could be construed as evidence of an infinitely wise designer.
And isn't god deliciously brillant to have us sleep for 8 hours a day, when that is exactly 1/3 of a twenty four hour day? And get this, it's dark during the part of the day when we go to sleep! Magnificent how god planned all of this out, in great detail, 6000 years before inventing man! And he rigged it so that the sun didn't come on or go off all of a sudden, like a streetlamp or a lightswitch, oh no, god invented dawn and dusk to ease from night to day and day to night. Praise dah Lawd!

No it doesn't. A skin will form over the top as it cools, but if you drop a solid piece of parafin into liquid parafin, it will sink.

2) As opposed to freezing from the top-down?
3) If animals couldn't survive in certain circumstances, they wouldn't be here. Therefore, all those that are here are, by definition, fit to their environment.
