The bible didn't say anything about stopping slavery. It pretty much said slavery is fine. But it isn't the type of slavery you believe in. The slaves were treated as family. It would be the same as having a housecleaner or gardener today.

...except that you pay your housecleaners and gardeners (or so I would hope).
And they can leave your employ when they choose.
And they entered your employ by choice.
And they can do what they want with themselves, and don't get marked as yours.
Heck, they can work for other people and earn more money! Well, if they have time. But if they don't, you'd better be paying them pretty well.
Owning another human being is abominable and barbaric, unworthy of a 21st Century human.
I do hope you're not an American citizen, Rene. Otherwise I'd need to come over and beat you over the head with my copy of The Constitution.
A virgin housecleaner that has watched you slaughter her baby brother, mother, and father... yah, very family like. Numbers 31:13-18

I've got an opening for a house cleaner here at my home. Why don't you come over and I'll hire you under the same terms that slaves were held by in the Old Testament.
Exodus 21:2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
21:4 If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
The chapter goes on to say that if, at the end of your term as a slave you decide you don't want to leave your wife and children, as your owner I'm allowed to drive a hole through your ear and mark you as my property until you die. And since your wife and daughters belong to me, guess what? That's right, I'm entitled to f*** them blind.
Sound good? Get in touch with me and I'll arrange it. I think a similar legal state could be arranged for you by having you declared non compos mentis (mentally incapable) and being appointed as your power of attorney.
Well, the "no, they were treated like slaves" thing has already been pointed out... but, well, NO. THEY WERE TREATED LIKE SLAVES.
And "the type of slavery you believe in."? The FUCK is that supposed to mean? We here in the civilized world don't believe in any kind of slavery, dumbass.
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)
For god's sake, stop trying to use the bible to justify your bigotries and hatreds you lazy, drooling, simpleton.
Here's some facts for you:-
The bible contains errors and is inconsistent.
The bible should not be used as a guide to anything.
The bible is immoral and unethical.
The bible is XXX and not for decent people.

So according to your bible I can beat my housekeeper or gardner as long they do not die of their injuries ?
Looks like everything you can say about the myth that biblical slavery was different from other slavery already has been said.
It is always funny how believers in the literal truth of the bible always try to explain why bibliclas slavery was different from other slavery, biblical atrocities (like the genocides ordered by god) were different from normal atrocities and why even the worst action commited by god against humans doesn´t contradict their belief that YHWH is a loving god with perfect morals ;)
Oh, I didn't mean nasty slavery, I meant super-nice Bible slavery, which is really, really lovely and humanitarian!
Apart from the rape bit... And the beating with a rod bit... And the forced marriage bit... Er... *scuttles off*
Yes, of course... except for the fact that they weren't considered people, and that allowed to deminish them and punish tme simply "because"... but that's a minor detail considering how you people are supposed to treat your family, i supposed at least in that they WERE treated as family.

Oh, that must be why Moses was so insistent upon liberating his people from Egypt.
Or not.
If you're going to defend the bible, at least take a few minutes upon occasion to read the fucking thing.

...A housecleaner or a gardener that you could legally beat, rape, and sell, that is.
I agree with you 100% Absolutely Correct in Christ Jesus.
...so...
How much will you sell your daughter to me for? I can use a good house slave right now.
How about your mother? Would you sell your mother to me as a slave?
I'm a terrible housekeeper. Rene YOU can be my slave, and keep my place clean, and get me real meals insteasd of the Stouffer's frozen dinners that have been keeping me alive since I moved out of my parents' place.
Actually, he's completly right about this.
Until you remember how badly they treated their families back then too...
Reminds me of the one about the Roman slaves chained to the oars of a galley. The big bruiser beating out the strokes on a drum suddenly stops. The men turn to look at him. "All right, you scum," the bruiser shouts. "I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, we're going to take a ten-minute break. The bad news is, after the break the captain wants to water ski."
One in three children born into slavery were sold away from their family of origin before age five.
That was the answer of an expert in the history of slavery in America at a select seminar I attended three years ago when a Fundie from South Carolina brought up the "slaves were part of the family" argument.

Funny, I did that exact same thing to my second cousin last week. [/sarcasm]

You mean the ones that get threatened with INS if they step out of line? Yeah, I'd say it's pretty close to that.
Exodus 21:20-21
And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.
Titus 2:9-10
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
Awww ...they were like family? How sweet.
My husband spewed this crap at me the other day. After I ripped him a new asshole, he literally hung his head.
Confused?
