Conservatives love invoking academics when it suits them. Answers in Genesis bristles with professors of religion, engineering, literature, even science, and they publish journals which they want to appear respectable, even though what they contain is nonsense. Academics can be found in the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute and many, many other conservative lobby groups. We even have whole universities devoted to turning out conservative academics, like Liberty, Oral Roberts, BJU, BYU, Ave Maria, Patrick Henry College etc. etc. The chief figures of their religion, whose teachings fundies profess to follow, like Martin Luther and John Calvin, were academics. Even an ignoramus like Kent Hovind seems to feel the need to call himself "Dr Dino" on the basis of not one, but four worthless PhDs from Patriot Bible University.
Yes, there were intellectuals who were complicit in the Holocaust and Stalinism and many other totalitarian projects and they include people like Heidegger and Sartre, some of the greatest minds of the 20th century. People who live in the world of ideas sometimes get carried away with the effect that they have in practice, the type where "we can see it works, but it doesn't work in theory." This is, perhaps, an occupational hazard. Another one is that, while the intellectual has no power by himself, he has the capacity to influence those in power and may receive great rewards and privileges as a result.
And then there are the intellectuals (in the context of Nazi Germany, people such as Albert Einstein, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Karl Jaspers, Hannah Arendt, Thomas Mann etc.) who are true to their discipline, who live for their work and stay out of politics, those who stand up to the lure of the politicians and struggle for freedom of thought, freedom of expression and freedom of the individual, none of which you show any enthusiasm for.
As we're in the business of recommending books, here are two you might like read and reflect on:

By the way, I'll stop doing what I do if you swear you will never use anything created by an academic again. Starting with anesthetic.
