It is no surprise that more leftists buy books, including fairytale books, for their children, and pass along their political viewpoints as well. Leftists already live in Cloudcuckooland, which is next door to fairyland.

I suggest that some enterprising political scientist perform a similar study for any book-reading of any kind, not just books about schoolboy wizards, or, indeed, any idle pastime whatsoever. Leftism is found more among idle folk whose mental immune system is weak: among teens, among university professors, and among everyone else who does not work for a living.

Book-reading encourages intelligence and inquisitiveness. I understand why you find that so intimidating, Mr. Wrong.

Fundies all buy the same fairy-tale book for their kids, and pass along their political viewpoints as well. They're the ones with weak mental immune systems; they are easily persuaded by conspiracy theories, and simple answers to complex questions.

Everyone who does not work for a living? You mean people who are born with a full set of silver spoons in their mouths...?

Teachers and professors work very, very hard for a pretty meager living, I'd say, and they have a very important job; preparing the next generation for life.

Well, it's no comfort to the 'There's no afterlife' crowd BUT IT'S COMFORT TO ME, M'KAY? In my worldview, there are NOT 'Karma Houdinis'. Unlike the Abrahamic types, however, I DON'T believe a stay in Inferno is forever. Once Pol Pot has passed his allotted time there, his soul will be pure and he'll go to the Summerland with everyone else. It may be weird for a NeoPagan to believe in a 'Heaven/Hell' concept but A LOT of traditions, be they Abrahamic, Dharmic or even Pagan, have this concept.

Off my tangent about afterlife punishment....STUPIDITY IS NOT COOL!

I'm a machinist. I probably work harder in a given week than you work in an entire month. I'm being generous to you there too. I'm sorry but whining about politics and religion full-time, are not work. They are the very definition of idleness.

I love the fact that at the very top of his site, the logo beneath his name says Author. Kind of like he's proud of it, or something. There's certainly nothing wrong with being a writer, except this is a guy bashing books, and people who read them. I may be a blue collar dirtbag, but that seems pretty dumb to me.

And the figure in that logo. Complete with wide brimmed fedora, trench coat, long red scarf, and a cane. A fucking cane! He doesn't appear to be elderly or handicapped, so he has no business carrying a cane. People who work for a living don't dress like that. Fucking hipsters do. Maybe pimps too.

Oh, that episode of "MLP:FiM" when Rainbow Dash discovered the joys of literature! Even 'Two-Hoofed' pulp adventures are imagination-expanding; I refer John C. WRONG! to Edgar Rice Burroughs, who is to literature what the likes of "Forbidden Planet" and "This Island Earth" were to 'B-Movies': how these brought the genre out of the mire and made Sci-Fi shine through, ultimately to Kubrick's "2001" giving it the credibility it deserved, and Lucas' "Star Wars IV: A New Hope" the power & popularity it needed; Fantasy was aided in the process too, via Tolkien & Herbert (his 'Sci-Fantasy' "Dune").

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is essentially Pulp. Daring Do - Dash's favourite books - being the equine Indy.

Thinking Allowed is correct, reading your bible is one of the best ways to become an atheist, the first two books of the Old Testament alone paint your God as a cosmic bully who sets people up for failure, Adam and Eve, then punishes them, creates a world he knows will become wicked, then instead of getting rid of just the wicked, wipes out all but a handful of survivors and the animals they were caring for in what your book describes as a global extinction level event, and a host of other things. And before you argue that Noah and his family were the only righteous people left, are you telling me that babies and children deserved to drown, that the animals deserved to drown, because that is a god that doesn't deserve worship. And for the record your flood story is at best an exaggeration of a large localized flood, or series of floods, not a world wide event.
I could go on and on through the whole bible pointing out examples of cruelty and stupidity, but you yourself with your hateful conceited attitude provide more than enough incentive to stay away from your religion.

Same here. What is the OP smoking? Any Leftist/Liberal/Progressive/Social Justice-fan worth their salt would fully support Walesa, the Chinese Democracy Movement, etc.

What's truly tragic about the China one is that the survivors just sorta gave up. You'd think that they'd regroup and keep on fighting but they just said "the hell with it". Very disheartening. I guess not every great movement works out with pure awesomesauce.

At least the works of Walesa and the Solidarity Movement and other Pro-Democracy/Labor Movements bore some fruit after a while.
