"However, there is evidence the Earth is still and the sun goes around it. Experimentas with water-filled telescopes provides evidence that the sun goes around the Earth."
...which was destroyed when Galileo's findings contradicted the Copernican model. The model that the Roman Catholic Church had relied (with the emphasis on lied) upon to explain the superstitious bullshit in the Bible. Because it wouldn't look good to it's believers if what they'd been taught to accept as fact was nothing more than pure fantasy now, would it, and we can't be having that now, can we?! [/sarcasm]
Thus the RCC basically told Galileo to STFU or be left to the tender mercies of the Inquisition. Unfortunately, it was the Renaissance, the time of great technological leaps. Certainly those that dragged civilisation out of the Dark Ages:

Thus the rot set in. The gaps started to be filled. And one of those early gaps filled was by religion itself: when the first church put up a lightning conductor, thus destroying the supposed 'power' of God's 'wrath', therefore beating their own 'God' at his own game. Ergo, man became superior to 'God'. QED
In recent years, the RCC had no choice but to acknowledge that Galileo was right all along. Even to acknowledge that Evolution is fact. And that not only is the universe expanding (thus their acknowledgement of the Big Bang as fact), but is accelerating. Oh, and that 'Limbo' is nothing more than a 'theological concept'. Which kinda fucks up the rest of their doctrine, if they readily dismiss what was once Holy Writ.
The RCC has had to become King Cnut, and accept that even they can't stop only the tide of technological progress, but also secular progress.
So what's stopping you, NephilimFree?
Ah, but that's the fundie Bible literalist all over. Having to do the intellectual equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting 'LA-LA-LA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!'.
Because having to do what the RCC did would contradict your precious Bible, and thus destroy your so-called 'beliefs'.
