If this vilification of masturbation is coming from where I think it is...That wasn't Onan's crime. Rather, it was his spite-fueled attempts to deny his sister-in-law a child, with coitus interruptus as his "weapon" of choice. How much spite do you seriously think is involved in typical masturbation?

(Hebrew custom of the time said that if a woman's husband died before she could conceive his child, it was the husband's brother's duty to make sure she DID have a child, to obliquely continue the husband's bloodline. Cue me wondering if their understanding of bloodline was like the claim that Theseus had one mother and TWO fathers, Aegeus and Poseidon, from both of them impregnating his mother at nearly the same time. Maybe he was a genetic chimera?)

The only problem with masturbation is that some people (who are usually emotionally unhealthy) think it's a problem... Or they think they can do it in public.

Well, point is it's nothing to be ashamed of, unless you're the latter. But then again if your audience is informed and willing...

Joking aside, there's physical and mental health benefits. Alleviating stress/frustration, building endurance and confidence for when you're no longer flying solo, technique in some cases, and for males reducing risk of prostate cancer. (There may be benefits for women I am not privy to.) There are certain medical conditions that can make this normally healthy activity painful but that is not a case of sin, but rather a matter to be discussed with a doctor.

Really now, if we adhered to the most insecure religious stances on sexuality we'd have died out due to abstinence or insanity.

From a strictly Biblical point of view (so far as I can remember from the times I read the Bible) sex and self-pleasure were not a sin. Covetous desire for that which belongs or has been promised to another (relationships that have yet to be solidified or polyamorous leanings are much more difficult to define in these terms) were what condemned you.
