Why pretend that the Phelps are anything other than what they claim to be? They are acting upon the words of the bible precisely as written. Therefore, they are True Christians. They are also hateful, disgusting arseholes - that's what results from being True to the Faith.
I think fundies who decry the ACLU hate America, civility, liberty, and the Union.

I can empathize with the point of view, but it's a fantasy Tduncan. If you're going to identify yourself as a member of an organization, you have to accept the fact that people you find repugnant are part of the same organization.
Uh, Phelps is actually a megalomaniac in his own right, who was a con-artist and general fraudster and bully for several years before "finding religion", that is, dressing his extant pressures and scams up in the Bible and twisting "the word of Gawd" to stand in for his non-existent credibility.Check this out, among other places.

Phelps group isn't even remotely the only one like that. It's just the groups like his, have a doctrine like his to NEVER GET ALONG WITH ANY OTHER GROUP.
He only uses "Baptists" to seem legit and because you really can't copyright it and deny others use of the Title. After all, the Klan is embraced by segments of the Southern Baptist but the others can't stop the useage.
