The Bible says they were but the Bible says a lot of things such as saying that goats copulating in front of patterned rods will produce offspring that are the same pattern as the rods so pardon me for taking what the Bible says with a grain of salt. And even if they were, Sodom and Gomorrah, like most ancient cities and cultures, is long gone so you don't have to worry about them slitting anyone's throat. I'm more worried about religious and political fundies slitting people's throats than some extinct ancient culture.
