Isn't the population of the U.S. around 400 million? if so, 50 million alcoholics is certainly significant...
The population of the USA is a shade over 300 million people. According to the World Health Organization, the percentage of alcoholics in the USA is between 4 and 8 percent, giving us a number between 12 and 24 million alcoholics. Less than half the number given by nerdklasic .
Actually, I'm in favor of legalized prostitution, equal rights for homosexuals and the freedom to drink and smoke whatever you want. I wouldn't go to a prostitute, I'm not gay, I hardly drink alcohol at all and I don't smoke tobacco, but I think people should have those choices if they don't hurt others. What's your problem?

What kind of law sentences my grandmother to death for having been an alcoholic in the past (having her 30-year sobriety party next week!)? What kind of law kills my friends, who are good people, who have never hurt others, who pay taxes and have jobs, because they love and have sex with each other? What kind of law puts me to death for having one cigarette every six months (if that)?
The class of law that enable you to do whatever you want as long as don't intrude into other people's right and the one which doesn't prevent people to break it, no matter how forbidden is. By your standards, I don't know a muslim country where there is no death penalty, or where women are treated as equals. Where is freedom then?
Besides, USA has a population of 300 million people. So, 25 million gays and 30(not 50)million alcoholics plus 3000000 prostitutes don't constitute but less than 5% of the population, nothing to worry about. And what are you hinting anyway, that the mere fact of forbidding it, it's going to make them saints?. And what about smoking?, why is bad in women and good in men?

USA has only got about 1.5 million fags, and they're dying off.
