I can't see the possiblity for so many perfect things... Our food chain, nutrition, reproduction, atmosphere, the placement of the stars that we can have calendars and clocks, the waves in the ocean. That the trees 'breath' the opposite as we do so we continue to live. That the sun is the perfect distance from us - so we don't freeze over or burn up. -->That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest.<-- The list goes on and on. I don't see how we could NOT believe it is for a reason.

That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest.
I like you, you're silly.
The fact that male genitalia are so exposed and vulnerable and kickable, the black plague, HIV, mosquitoes, poison ivy, cholera, how meat rots, gangrene, cancer, the vulnerability of the human mind to everything from clots to chemical imbalances...
wow...the stupid it burns!
Somebody doesn't understand the concept of rotation. And has the cart before the horse. The reason the world appears so well-suited for us is that we evolved to be well suited for it. No need to bring invisible sky pixies in.
The argument from fine-tuning:
We observe that a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of the observable universe is known to be hospitable to human life.
Therefore it must all be here for our sake.
When the moon covers the sun [that's a solar eclipse, moron], all you fucking fundies run for the hills because you think the world is ending. If this is the sort of "reasoning" your faith promotes, then you can shove it right up your ass.
"That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest."
You fail at astronomy.
Now, just to have something different to talk about...
"the placement of the stars that we can have calendars and clocks"
Our calendars and clocks are not based on the stars. Except that really big one that appears daily.
Wow, just look at that horse push that cart.
I also think it's neat the way God made a nice snug little island for those short little Japanese people to live on.
Yeah, and if one of those factors had turned out different, the human race might have been mobile vegetables migrating between cow flops...
It's not the moon's shadow you dolt - it's the Great Stark Fist of Removal!!1!
I'll have to agree with Scott Bakker on this, even if I don't like his books.
These people see the cause as the consequence and set a god to be the cause in its place.
The stars were not placed so we could get calendars and clocks, instead we designed them according to the stars. The sun is not the perfect distance so we don't freeze or burn, but rather, that we do not freeze or burn signifies that the sun is at an ideal distance. You have put everything upside down and inside out.
You wanna know what's even more amazing? That holes in the ground are EXACTLY the right shape to hold whatever puddle happens to form in them. AMAZING!
1. If things were different, then things would be different.
2. That would be bad.
3. Therefore, God exists.
the placement of the stars that we can have calendars and clocks
Umm, the calendars and clocks came after the stars, thru observing the movements of the celestial bodies, not the other way around (he can't seriously think that we made clocks, and then realised that the planetary cycle matched up with them can he?).
That the sun is the perfect distance from us - so we don't freeze over or burn up
If it wasn't, then we wouldn't be here. Simple.
-->That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest.<--
Ahahahahahahahahahaha *headdesk* Ouch, i think my brainmeats just imploded...
Inexcusable egocentrism FTW!
Erm, yeah, we can explain all of those things fairly well. It has nothing to do with whether it was all made that way specifically for us, but rather, that we are here because it just ended up that way.
Our food chain, nutrition, reproduction, atmosphere, the waves in the ocean.
What world do you live in where any of those things are perfect? I love this kind of argument though as it's so beyond short sighted. I remember watching a youtube video once where they made the same argument and showed images of various animal life. It amazes me how anyone can look at a bird with various colors on their beak and say that such a creature is so perfect that the only way it can exist is if a perfect being popped into existence/always existed to make it so. Just try to envision what your perfect, all powerful god would be like if you could view this universe builder (you should conclude that such a power is beyond anything you can imagine) and tell us again how the waves are too perfect to exist on their own, but that "logic" doesn't also apply to the mountain you created to explain these smaller mountains. Unfortunately, you people can ignore that since you're taught to see god as a bearded Human being and don't question where the power to create galaxies by snapping his fingers comes from.
RadRob, you are exactly right! Things would not be so perfect if Odin, Vili, and Ve hadn't slain Ymir and made the world from his body!
That the sun is the perfect distance from us - so we don't freeze over or burn up.
Go to wikipedia and look up two things: winter then desert. You will note that these two conditions affect 2/3 of the land area of this planet. Now tell me again how again it is that this place is so perfectly balanced for us...
There lies the fundy difference. We believe that humans adapted to this environment which gives it's illusion of perfection versus the environment being created for humans. One question about the later though. Why can't humans survive in the most severe climates on this planet without technology to aid them? If everything is so perfect, why are there places on Earth that humans simply can't live? I can only conclude that the idea of intelligent design is a bunch of shit.
"It is demonstrable," said he, "that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for as all things have been created for some end, they must necessarily be created for the best end. Observe, for instance, the nose is formed for spectacles, therefore we wear spectacles. The legs are visibly designed for stockings, accordingly we wear stockings. Stones were made to be hewn and to construct castles, therefore My Lord has a magnificent castle; for the greatest baron in the province ought to be the best lodged. Swine were intended to be eaten, therefore we eat pork all the year round: and they, who assert that everything is right, do not express themselves correctly; they should say that everything is best."
Voltaire: Dr. Pangloss, Candide
ignoring the BS, all I will say is that the human mind always produces patterns and structures to what it experiences. The patterns may be wrong (the constellations aren't join the dot diagrams), but the need to impose order on a disordered world is built-in
"That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest."
SRSLY??
Yeah, we've got a BS / Puddle code in area Gamma Omega.
"the placement of the stars that we can have calendars and clocks"
"That the moon covers the sun for the right amount of time for us to get rest."
Yeah, you just keep moving those Scriptural goalposts, and 'reinterpreting' & rewriting the rules of the game too.
You fundies have been doing so since the USSR sent up Sputnik 1 in 1957 and Yuri Gagarin in 1961, then NASA sent up Apollo 11 in 1969, with Neil Armstrong's 'One Small Step For Man'.
Sputnik 1 alone destroyed Genesis in the Bible cosmologically, when it proved there was no 'firmament', a solid 'dome' above the Earth.
And of course, all the evidence found since Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" continues to destroy Genesis biologically.
You know what happens to gods once gaps are filled, don't you? Just ask Zeus, Amun-Ra, Jupiter, Odin, et al...
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
