First, according to this translation to English (New American Bible), no-one is buying children as slaves. They are buying slaves FROM the children of foreigners, who were reared in the Israelites' land. Anyway, yes, slavery was a practice in very ancient days. If the slave is treated with justice, and taking into account the fact that otherwise they would have been killed in war, it is not unethical at all.
