David Berkowitz quoted the sins of "fornication" hence his attacks on couples enflagrante in cars. Peter Sutcliffe targetted hookers who he believed were sinful.
Most serial killers come from backgrounds of religious intolerance, religious fanaticism and abuse. Its almost always the case.
There are few atheists in prison, when compared to those who are "religious".

1) If someone worships satan, then they put their beleif in a deity. In other words, they ARE religious.
2) Since when is murder and rape "unnecessary things"? I'm an atheist to the core of my bones and I fucking know that murder and rape are "horrendous deeds".
3) 93.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
I had a set of satin sheets once. Damn things were so slippery we kept falling off the bed. So, from now on, I'm strictly worshipping cotton (provided it has a high thread count, of course) .
Satin is some pretty tacky stuff; I can't see anyone actually worshiping it. But if they want to, who am I to stop them? That's what religious freedom is about in this country. All can worship whatever the hell they want.
