The main reason why we know that the Genesis account is true is because God was seen traveling in the presense of Israel in the manifestation of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. --A modern person would freak out and assummingly say, "It's a UFO!!" But God is not a UFO because God is identified!!

We know Genesis is true because characters in Genesis say they saw pillars of cloud and fire.
Actually, a reasonable modern person would probably think the clouds to be a tornado and the fire to be an hallucination.
FREZZILLA, I have identified you as an UFN - Unbelievable Fundie Nut.
There are a couple of natural phenomena that would appear as a "pillar of fire."
The most obvious is a column of light above (and below) the Sun, when the sun is shining through the right kind of cloud. It's best observed shortly after sunset, or before sunrise.
Another possibility is the Zodiacal Light, a cone of faint light in the night sky, caused by sunlight scattering off dust in the plane of the solar System. It's best seen in Spring and Autumn, and is about as bright as the milky way.
Which reminds me: the milky way itself could be a third possibility.
Hm. The volcano idea is vaguely plausible, actually; the smoke and ash would be more noticeable by day, and the glowing lava at night.
Still, my money is on it simply being invented whole cloth. Not every silly myth is based on fact.
Actually, nowhere is God identified as identical with either pillar. He is said to be within the pillar, to be the guide using the pillar, etc. but never to actually be the pillar.
Further, the last take on it I'd seen (and I'd like to know if anyone else has heard it) was that it was common to refer to the particular kind of torch carried at the lead of Egyptian armies as "a pillar" exactly like the one in Exodus. According to this interpretation, there was a fairly common torch that was used to somewhat incredibly lead the Jewish people through a harsh land. This was used not just to lead their own people, but to put a light in the Egyptian's eyes during the night so they could sneak off and other tricks. (One light bulb can do it for me...)
I'm not sure of this interpretation, but UFO? No. It would be nice if there were at least reports of UFOs that looked even remotely like any depiction of the pillars.
So...we know the bible is true because the bible says its true.
Okay, anyone see the problem with this fellow's reasoning?
The story has value, culturally, it's a Jewish fable. Grimms collected tales are just as valid, just as likely and demand no adherance or belief.
It's not the cultural tales I object to, it's not even the belief of them, it's the hierarchy I object to. The assertive, controlling, demanding and parasitical nature of religion(s)
It's the hierarchy of religion, the control, the leaders, the man that I object to. Back in the day of tales the best you could hope for is a free meal for an entertaining story. Now Christian leaders live in mansions and expect total obedience.
