Mistranslation is a common phrase used by Muslims when embarrassing verses are shown.
Why they never say mistranslation for a peaceful verse?

I tried reading the Qu'ran once, just out of curiosity, to see how it compared to, say, the bible. And I sincerely hope I DID get a fucking awful translation, cos I couldn't make any sense of it whatsoever. The bible's pretty bad in that it's full of mediocre stories, with a lousy plot structure and one-dimensional characters a primary school kid would scorn, from which one could draw almost any conclusion one wished (this is one of its biggest problems, come to think of it), but I just couldn't make any sense AT ALL of the bits of the Qu'ran I read. Maybe I just dipped in a bad bit, perhaps my experience was analogous to reading Revelation first of all when picking up a bible for the first time.
Brain_in_a_jar: the Kuran is in a poetic style that loses a lot in translation, like Chinese and Japanese literary texts become somewhat weird and nonsensical in English. One can learn to appreciate the style, but the intellectual contents tend to be even worse that the Bible's (but not by much).

That's something of a relief to hear, Jacob, though I had suspected such a possibility - write something sufficiently subtle or complex in any language and it can become virtually untranslatable. That said, if the original message is comprehensible by the average human mind, it should be well within the means of a good writer to express it clearly in any language in which he is fluent, provided he is allowed to write something other than a direct translation.
