Escalating in Iraq is exactly what should be happening. After a few tens of thousands of islamists have been annihilated, things might begin to improve.

Nekhbet: By MAD do you mean angry or insane?
Yes.
Just "a few tens of thousands", Tommy Boy? After the six hundred thousand already annihilated do you really think that "a few (more) tens of thousands" will make the difference? C'mon Tommy, surely you mean millions? But wait, why stop there? Why not just annihilate a few billion so you can have the entire planet to yourself you bloody mad fuckwit.
Nekhbet - I would have guessed more along the lines of Mutually Assured Destruction. After all, what he's proposing would not alleviate any tensions, and would only serve to get the remaining "islamists" [sic] even angrier, which would likely drive volunteers to an all-time high.
The issue is that he's trying to imagine this as a "gentleman's war", which has no concept of guerilla tactics nor of urban warfare. Wars like these are literally impossible to win by the very nature of how they are fought. The more hostiles you kill, the more neutrals are driven to resist. You cannot win without exterminating every last person in the area. If any are left, there is an implicit level of trust that they won't kill you which they can use to cause far greater damage than if you had killed them in the first place.
So basically, the only way to win something like this is to neutron-bomb the place. Indiscriminately kill everything that moves. Of course, that then escalates to getting whole nations mad at you, so you've got to kill the whole world otherwise any others that you leave alive will be able to strike at you. Hooray paranoia. :p
But yes. I'm betting that this Tom Rackhan hasn't even read The Art Of War, let alone any of the modern discussions of military tactics.
Gee, sounds like the script of Black Adder the 4th where military command is advocating a full frontal charge into machine guns because that's what they've done the previous twenty times, therefore the enemy wont be expecting it because they'd expect a change of plan.
Kill tens of thousands - things worsen.
Kill tens of thousands more - things worsen.

Kill tens of thousands more - things must improve this time
For every islamist you kill, there will be ten willing to take his place. And that you´re creating martyrs doesn´t count either. And there are not as many as 10,000 in Iraq. Remember that they´re ony 20 million people.
Al Qaida still brings up the Crusades to this day, and that happened over 700 years ago. So if history is any guide, Muslim extremists will still be using the invasion of Iraq as an excuse to kill Westerners in 2700.
You are 'Mad', aren't you.
The purpose of war (thought not neccessarily in this case), is to end violence and killing. It is supposed to be a means to peace, ironic as that seems at times. But an escalation means you are getting farther from your goal, it means that there are still many pissed off insurgents who are going to be bolstered, if anything, by the 'martyrs' that die. More death will only bring more death. It isn't that hard to grasp.
Well, last nite (Jan 23, 2007) during his address to the nation, Dubya said he is sending another 20,000 troops into the meat grinder known as Iraq-nam. That should please ol' Mad Tom.
Confused?
