Funny. Here in Germany, ca. 150 theologists (not theologians by the way) have written a letter to the church asking it to stop the extreme discrimination against homosexuality. Did they get it wrong too?
Also: Until at least the 19th century blacks were generally thought of as lesser beings than white people, even by the most intelligent white people. The same goes for women. How did they get it all wrong for such a long time?
The same theologians who thought it was okay to change the day of the sabbath? Or that you must eat fish on friday? Or you suddenly don't have to cut off foreskin anymore? Those people couldn't possibly be a product of their time, or fallible, or misguided. And what makes that so harmful is that they got to decide what is orthodox and then you're not allowed to question it anymore, on pain of burning alive.
Adam, for fifteen centuries there was doctrinal agreement by every "genius theologian" on the transubstantiation of the bread and wine of the mass/liturgy into the body and blood of Christ. They also agreed on the exaltation of the Mother of God and the value of monastic orders. They couldn't figure it out? They all got it wrong?
By "genius theologians" he means the ones who fred his pet interpretation. Do the scholars who advocated Universalism don't count (even CS Lewis had a believe in post mortem repentance) ? Guess not seeing as Ford's a calvinist.
Never mind that there have been LGBT Christian advocates as far back as Troy Perry, who founded the first gay-affirming Christian church in Los Angeles in 1968, wrote The Lord Is My Shepherd and He Knows I’m Gay" and has been performing same-sex unions as early as 1970.
Likewise their is Rick Brentlinger, who's a fundie himself but has a website full of thorough research on undrrstandings of Christianity, homosexuality and the clobber verses.
We also learn in the early days of Christianity of Sergius and Barcchus, two male lovers who became martyrs of the Christian Faith and are canonized Saints by the Catholic Church.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
