*Ahem*
I am a German, and believe me: What Hitler has done for Germany was NOT great.
What he has done was quite the contrary than "great". He lead the country in the WORST way possible. The absolute majority of Germans nowadays is deeply ashamed of the Third Reich.
BTW: The Nazi government was even far from being effective. It was a constant struggle of power games between pompous, bloated Nazi functionaries. The only things that worked in Nazi Germany was the propaganda machine, hate, and death. In reality, the "accomplishments" of the Third Reich were a joke.
"Hitler eliminated unemployment"? Everything was build on debt, the whole system was paid for with future war conquests. "Everybody could afford a car"? Only in the official propaganda, in reality it main purpose was to build factories for the planned war.
The "atlantic wall"? Fell immediately on D-Day. The "invincible U-Boat fleet"? Nearly none of the U-Boat sailors survived the war, and the U-Boats became an ineffective weapon very quickly. The "Enigma cryptographic machine"? Hacked by British scientists quite early in the war. The "miracle weapons"? Existed mostly in imagination. "German nuclear program"? An hopelessly underfunded toy project, without the slightest chance of ever producing a nuclear weapon.
In the last years of WW2, the British developed plans for a possible assassination of Hitler by snipers. The plan was rejected; mainly because it was realized that Hitler was such a bad strategist that it was better to keep him alive than to risk that a capable leader would seize power after his death.
And I don't want to speak of the Holocaust and all the other unbelievable atrocities. What happened there is beyond imagination.
Hitler was not great. He was a raving madman.
