[Excerpt from the Gospel of Nutrider]

Man again lifted his eyes to the Lord and said, "Lord, our men of science have told us that our emissions are greenhouse gasses and the climate will surely cause global warming. The ice caps will melt and the seas will rise, causing the end of man."

And the Lord sayeth, "Are these not the men that think they crawleth from the loins of chimps? Do they not know that when floating ice melts the level of water decreases, because ice displaces more than water doeth? Be ye not worried, for I shall destroy the earth in MY time, not thee by thy actions."

Man lifted his eyes to the Lord and said, "Lord, our men of science have told us that we should not drill oil, lest we spill some of it and contaminate the earth."

The Lord laughed with such ferocity had His hand not been upon the universe, it would have surely moved. "Surely thy men of science knows that oil cometh FROM the earth! How can that which cometh from the earth endanger the earth from which it cometh?"

Why am I not surprised Nutrider is unfamiliar with the Archimedes principle!
Someone should explain to him that boats don't levitate, nor do they walk on stilts, nor are they run by witchcraft, devilry or miracles. Also why am I not surprised he's unaware the ice sheets in question are attached to land masses like Greenland and Antarctica. Seas could rise by 8-10 metres. This will not cause the end of man, just a fuckload of inconvenience, especially on the majority of the subcontinent and a fair proportion of coastal cities. Be more afraid of drought than flooding and dying of heat stroke! Nice of you to assume the Lord's as dumb as you are, especially in the science department, - now your president might be capable of such an utterance, but "God's" meant to be omniescent remember! [HA!!!] Men of science said stop burning it needlessly, but instead conserve it for important applications in organic chemistry.

When was the last time god said "don't worry?" It's always "Worry sinners, you are all going to BURN unless you wallow in shame!" Oh, and impersonating god has GOT to be an instant ticket to ride the bullet train to hell, or so I've heard. This has to get some kind of False Prophet Award or something. Leave it to someone else to come up with a clever name.

Okay, I've seen the same mistake a couple of times, so I'll address it.

An immersed object can only displace at most a mass of water equal to it's own mass. So ice, being less dense than water (it expands when it freezes remember, that's why pipes burst in winter), displaces it's own mass, but less than it's own volume of water. That's why it floats.

When the ice melts it will become an equal mass of water again, and that water will be exactly equal to the displaced water in volume, so will exactly fill the 'hole' left behind by the melting ice, hence the water level doesn't rise. This is true where the stuff that is melting is the same as the stuff it's melting into.

HOWEVER...

A. In the case of the ice caps, most of the ice is not floating on the sea at all, but exists in land bound glaciers (Greenland, Antarctica, etc.), if these melt the water will add to the water in the oceans and cause a rise in sea-level.

B. Sea water is salty, the ice floating on top is (mostly) not. Saltwater is denser than freshwater, so when the ice melts it will create a volume of freshwater of equal mass to the volume of displaced seawater, i.e. a slightly larger one. So even ice floating out at sea, when it melts, will cause a slight increase in sea level.

C. Water expands as it gets warmer (from about 3C onwards), so just warming the water will cause a sea level rise, regardless of whether melting ice adds to the overall volume or not.

So the Lord knowth not his physyks, perhaps he should haveth paid more attention in diety classeth.

Just a little nitpick... Ice displaces more volume than the same mass of water, so if a chunk of ice is held completely beneath the surface, and it melts, the resulting volume of melt-water will be less than that of the ice, and the water level will drop accordingly.

However, free-floating ice will only displace a volume of water with a weight equal to itself, leaving a considerable portion of the ice above the surface. As it melts, it loses mass, which means losing weight, so it displaces less water and its waterline adjusts accordingly. All throughout this process, the overall water level does not change.

As others have mentioned, of course, melting ice not over water will in fact contribute to rising water levels.

You may now jump out of your bathtub and run naked down the street shouting "Eureka!" (should you feel so inclined).
