You would say islam is peacfull, cause 500 years ago, they were peacful, ain't no more they are.

No one has ever been killed in the name of atheism. Certain killers, rulers, despots and dictators may have been atheist, but they did not do what they did because of it. Check the statistics of people in prison in the USA.

Percent in prison population of the USA:
- 83% christian
- 0.2% atheist

Percent in whole population of the USA:
- 78% christian
- 15% atheist

And you call us the bad ones?

Firstly, Catholics are Christians.

Secondly, Hitler was a Christian. He was simply following the Christian doctrine that Jews are the "Christ-Killers."

Thirdly, Communism is simply a secularized version of a particular variant of Christianity. For most of history, the Communists were Christians, until Marx and a few others decided to just get rid of all the stuff about God and make Communism secular (of course, the variant of Christianity that became Communism was premillenialist, meaning that they believed they needed to rule the world for 1000 years in order for their fictitious sun god "Christ Jay-sus" to return).

Unforunately, this person doesn't seem to realize that Catholicism, the Nazis, Stalin, and Pol Pot all are related to Christianity.

A very funny thread, but it's a shame that Redhunter later says that no-one kills in the name of atheism.

They do, the Russian Orthodox Chruch in particular suffered quite badly in the name of atheism. Whether the continuance of religious belief really bothered the Soviet leadership or whether they merely wanted to dismantle a potential rival is debatable. But it remains a fact that it was for the stated purpose of removing improper religious influences upon the public that thousands of ROC clergy were imprisoned and executed.

Any belief can become militant if it is held by someone with sufficient power and influence to effect it upon others, and there are certainly secular and atheist fundies about, as we sometime post here.

To claim that 'nobody kills in the lack of a name of a religion' is to deliberately make ourselves blind to those potential 'guerillas in our midst'.

Not all Muslims are terrorists or militant. Roughly the same percentage of Muslims and Christians are extremist. In fact, there have been more attacks in the US by Christian extremists than Muslim.

To say that there have never been atrocities in the name of atheism is quite wrong. Worse yet, saying stuff like that just opens yourself up to an easy attack, and makes you indistinguishable from a fundie, so I would stay away from comments like that. There was a lot of religious persecution in the USSR and during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. A lot of the comments have been in the vain of “Stalin was atheist, but he didn’t kill in the name of atheism he just did it for political gain.” This is another bad argument because the vast majority of Religious killings (ie the Crusades) were power plays and land grabs, and it just so happened that religion is a good way to get people to do what you want them to do.

Most Nazi leaders were not really Christian. Many were raised Christian, but they had their own weird mash-up of Christianity, Paganism, and ancient Roman beliefs. Here’s a pretty good article about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism_and_Religion
Hitler was raised Catholic, but he gave up the sacraments by the time he was ~18. He believed in “Positive Christianity,” which was basically his own reworked version of Christianity that was far more anti-Semitic. It really wasn’t Christianity at all.

Also, I think that truereligion does actually make a decent point, in that the vast majority of Christian church approved atrocities were from a very long time ago. I’m not saying that they are meaningless, but at the same time it’s worth noting that Christianity has really grow away from it’s bloody past. Most people that consider themselves Christian today are very different from the Christians of 500 years ago. Yes, there are guys like McVey, abortion clinic bombers, and the cult leaders at Waco or Jonestown, but they are scorned by almost all of the religious leaders. I think that the point truerelgion was trying to make is that while there are bad people that do bad things in the name of Christianity, there aren’t any major denominations that condone these actions. Christianity has for the most part grown out of that.

One more thing, the percentage of Catholic Priests that are accused of abuse is actually lower then that of the general population.

In no way was I insinuating that Christians never did anything wrong.
I'm not even a religious person. I just don't like it when people use bad arguments to argue against another bad argument.
Several people were saying that Hitler was a Christian in an effort to show that one of the biggest murderers of all time was a Christian. Hitler by his own word wasn't a Christian. That's a bad argument, and it does more harm then good.

The Inquisition and the Crusades were a very long time ago, and the Catholic Church has condemned them. I don't think it is a good argument to use these things that happened hundreds of years ago as examples of problems with Christianity. There are plenty of other ways that can be done.

@truereligion: true that the things have been mention are not recent... but it still influence alot of people and doesnt have to be extreme overt attacks... the fundamentalist (of any sort) have 101 issues, like race, sexual orientation, AIDS, Gender and still counting... they may not use horrific violence but they do attack in other means like the internet, media and others. This website shows how many people are so narrowed minded and illogical.
I think i can say safely that the majority of us dont hate Christians in general... but the stupidity and extreme narrow thinking in some people irk alot of people...for obvious reasons of course...
