Trepanation = A Higher State of Consciousness?

For those of you who might not be aware, Trepanation is the procedure of boring a hole into a person's skull which thus enable more air to reach the brain. This is something that we seem to naturally go through as children.
As far as I have been able to ascertain our skull does not completely seal air tight until we are in the 6- 8 years of age bracket.
The effects of Trepanation are believed to be quite astonishing, including being able to achieve a higher state of conscious as well as increasing a persons metabolism and giving you more energy which is quite similiar to turning the clock back so to speak, there are claims that this procedure can also increase memory power and creativity.
I was hoping to get others views on this highly topical and controversial procedure. I'm pretty sure it's illegal or at the very least you'd be hard pushed to find a surgeon willing to perform the operation although it is apparently almost completely safe if done properly, it's when people can't find a surgeon and do a D.I.Y operation with a powerdrill that things seem to have gone pear shaped resulting in death/lobotomisation/ a vegetated state etc.
Apparently John Lennon took an interest in this and contemplated it.
